New Southlake Carroll football coach Riley Dodge said Wednesday that former Euless Trinity coaching legend Steve Lineweaver will come out of retirement and serve as Carroll's head of football operations.

Dodge said he approached Lineweaver with the idea of being a varsity assistant for Carroll and that "essentially he is going to be my eyes and ears at practice." Dodge said Lineweaver won't coach a certain position group, but will constantly be evaluating and that the two of them will meet regularly.

"There are only a few guys in the state of Texas with the credentials and skins on the wall as him," Dodge said. "I wanted to be around greatness."

Lineweaver declined to comment, saying in a text message, "We want Coach Dodge to be the single voice right now."

Dodge, a former star quarterback at Carroll, was named the Dragons' new coach last month, replacing Hal Wasson. This will be the first head coaching job for Dodge, who was an assistant coach at Flower Mound Marcus in 2015 and 2016 and worked as the offensive coordinator at Justin Northwest in 2017.

Lineweaver announced his retirement in December 2014 at the age of 68 after compiling a career record of 258-43-2 and winning four state championships in 22 seasons as a head coach. He coached 15 seasons at Trinity and won Class 5A Division I state titles in 2005, 2007 and 2009.

Lineweaver was a baseball coach and football assistant at Southlake Carroll for seven years before taking over as the head coach at Commerce in 1993. He won the 3A Division II state title at Commerce in 1999.

Lineweaver took a break from retirement in 2016 and served briefly as the interim coach at Mansfield after Jeff Hulme left for Waco Midway.
