How much success in 7-on-7 football transfers over come fall?

At this point there is little debate about 7-on-7 football helping with certain elements come the fall.

Whether it is timing between quarterbacks and receivers, work for the defensive backs, or simply team camaraderie, there is benefit to high schools having teams.

But just how much does success cross over?

There is no doubt it does: Over the past four years teams that have made quarterfinals of the state 7-on-7 finals, which begin Friday in College Station, have gone 657-181 (.784 winning percentage).

Here's a look at what happened to the 7-on-7 quarterfinalists last season:

Division I Fall record Division II Fall record
Lake Travis 13-3 Graham 14-1
Hebron 8-3 Kaufman 12-2
College Station 14-2 Cuero 12-1
A&M Consolidated 9-3 Navasota 6-5
Clear Brook 5-4 Texarkana Pleasant Grove 16-0
FW All Saints 11-1 Abilene Wylie 6-4
Waxahachie 8-5 San Augustine 14-1
Fort Bend Bush 7-5 China Spring 9-4

Of the 16 teams, not one finished under .500. Two -- Texarkana Pleasant Grove and College Station -- won state cahmpionships. Another, Lake Travis, reached the state title game.

There is an obvious question of correlation vs. causation. Are these teams winning because of their success in 7-on-7 or are they winning because teams with elite quarterbacks, receivers and defensive backs tend to win in both formats?

It's impossible to separate the two.

At the very least this weekend will provide a little insight into which teams to keep a close eye on in a few months.
