SportsDayHS recently unveiled its Midseason Player of the Year candidates. Today, we look at Coach of the Year candidates based on the first five weeks of the season.

VOTE on who you think is the Coach of the Year so far at the bottom of this post.

The front-runners

Cedar Hill's Carlos Lynn

Coming off a 4-6 season, Cedar Hill is 5-0 and dominating like it did when it won back-to-back state titles in 2013 and 2014. Cedar Hill has outscored the opposition 250-60 -- the biggest point differential in the area among Class 6A teams.

Next game: On Friday, Cedar Hill plays Mansfield Summit in a matchup of two teams tied for first in District 7-6A, along with Mansfield Lake Ridge

Plano East's Joey McCullough

Following a 3-7 season, Plano East switched from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense, and the results have been extraordinary. Plano East, off to a 5-0 start, ranks third in the area in scoring defense among 6A teams, allowing 11.2 points per game. Plano East has been equally tough against the run and the pass, allowing 120.6 yards per game on the ground and 123.4 yards per game through the air.

Next game: Plano East gets its toughest challenge of the season on Friday, playing at defending 6A Division I state champion Allen, ranked No. 1 in the state

Arlington Bowie's Danny DeArman

After a 3-7 season in 2017, Bowie is 4-1 overall and part of a three-way tie for first in District 4-6A at 2-0. Bowie has wins over Flower Mound Marcus and North Crowley, teams it lost to a year ago. Bowie now has one of the best passing attacks in the area, with Malcolm Mays ranking fourth among 6A area quarterbacks in passing yards (1,392) and tied for fourth in touchdown passes (15).

Next game: Friday's game against Arlington (5-0, 2-0) at 7:30 p.m. at UTA's Maverick Stadium will go a long way toward deciding the District 4-6A title. Both teams are tied with Arlington Lamar for first in the district

Allen's Terry Gambill

Allen is 5-0, has won 21 consecutive games and is ranked No. 4 in the nation by USA Today. The last time Allen lost a regular-season game was in 2012. Allen ranks eighth among area 6A teams in scoring offense (43.2 points per game) and is No. 2 in scoring defense (9.6 points per game).

Next game: It will be a battle for first in District 9-6A when Allen (5-0, 2-0) hosts Plano East (5-0, 2-0) at 7 p.m. Friday

Haltom's Jason Tucker

Over the last 12 years, Haltom averaged 2.7 wins per season and had a record of 32-87. That included a 1-19 record over the 2014 and 2015 seasons. Tucker has Haltom off to a 5-0 start this season and needs one more win to match last year's victory total, when the team finished 6-5. Haltom ranks No. 1 in the area among 6A teams in total offense (524.8 yards per game) and is No. 2 in scoring, averaging 51.8 points per game.

Next game: If Haltom wants to win the District 3-6A title, it's going to have to pull off an upset Friday at Pennington Field. The opponent is Euless Trinity (5-0, 2-0), ranked No. 9 in the state.

Five others to keep an eye on

Highland Park's Randy Allen: After winning back-to-back Class 5A Division I state championships, Highland Park (5-0, 2-0 in District 6-5A Division I) takes a 20-game winning streak into Friday's game against Mansfield Legacy.

Duncanville's Reginald Samples: Duncanville (4-0, 2-0 in District 8-6A) is up to No. 6 in the Class 6A state rankings and is No. 22 in USA Today's national rankings. Duncanville has allowed 4.8 points per game and has outscored the opposition 208-19.

Mansfield Lake Ridge's Kirk Thor: After moving up from 5A to 6A, Lake Ridge (3-1, 2-0 in District 7-6A) hasn't lost to a Texas team, beating Mansfield Timberview, South Grand Prairie and area power DeSoto. The only loss was 36-30 in the season opener to Tulsa Union, a nine-time state champion in Oklahoma.

Denton Ryan's Dave Henigan: After back-to-back trips to the Class 5A Division I state semifinals, Denton Ryan is 5-0 and ranked No. 3 in the state. Denton Ryan has allowed the third-fewest points among area 5A teams, and it has outscored its opponents 203-50.

Kimball's Henry Cofer: Coming off a 4-8 season, Kimball is 5-0 and tied for first in District 6-5A Division II. A year ago, Kimball lost 60-7 to Carter and lost 43-35 to Spruce. This year, Kimball beat Carter 21-15 and routed Spruce 55-7.
