GAME OF THE DAY

Wylie East scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth -- both on passed balls -- and beat Forney 2-1 on Friday. It was the first loss in District 15-5A for Forney, ranked No. 4 in the state in Class 5A by txhighschoolbaseball.com.

Entering the fifth inning, Forney pitchers had thrown 37 consecutive scoreless innings. Forney ace pitcher Jonathan Childress, who threw a no-hitter in his previous start, allowed two hits and struck out nine Friday and also drove in Forney's only run with a fourth-inning single.

Jayden Saylor pitched a six-hitter and struck out six for Wylie East (17-7-1, 8-4), and Justin Smith was 1 for 3 and scored a run. Wylie East remained one game behind second-place Highland Park in 15-5A.

FRIDAY'S STANDOUTS

SOFTBALL

Gabbi Lopez, Plano East: Hit a two-run single to cap a four-run bottom of the sixth as Plano East beat Plano 9-5 and shared the District 6-6A title with Plano West. Lopez finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs, Amy Jensen homered and scored three runs and Avery Markley was 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs for Plano East (18-10, 11-3), ranked No. 5 in the area in 6A. Second-ranked Plano (23-5, 10-4), which tied the score 5-5 with two runs in the top of the sixth, would have been the top seed from the district in the playoffs if it had won. Instead, Plano will be the No. 3 seed and Plano East and Plano West will decide Saturday if they will flip a coin or play a tiebreaker game to determine the No. 1 seed.

Gabi Hancher, Plano West: Tripled and homered as the state's sixth-ranked 6A team beat Denton Guyer 6-0. Sierra Lange threw a two-hit shutout and struck out nine.

Amanda Desario, Keller: The Texas Tech pledge went 4 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs as reigning 6A state champion Keller beat Haltom 12-0 and clinched the outright District 3-6A title. Keller (22-4-1, 11-1), which got a combined five-inning no-hitter from Dylann Kaderka and Sarah Taylor, finished one game ahead of Keller Timber Creek.

Savana Williamson, Sachse: Homered, had four RBIs and pitched a four-hitter as Sachse beat South Garland 14-1 and shared the District 10-6A title with Rowlett. They will have a coin flip Monday to determine the district's top seed. Sarah Wheeler and Tarynn Luttrull also homered for Sachse.

Kendall Fritz, Frisco Wakeland: The Nevada pledge threw a five-hitter as No. 5 Frisco Wakeland won the District 13-5A title by beating No. 7 Frisco 2-1 in a matchup of area-ranked 5A teams. Louisiana Tech signee Brooke Makemson was 3 for 3 with an RBI for Wakeland (24-4, 13-1), and Emily Collins had an RBI single in the top of the seventh that gave Wakeland a 2-0 lead. Texas A&M signee Maddie MacGrandle, SportsDay's All-Area player of the year last season, struck out 15 for Frisco. Frisco (17-7, 11-3), which could have shared the district title with a win, will instead be the No. 3 seed. Frisco finished one game behind second-place Frisco Centennial (17-5, 12-2), which beat Frisco Heritage 3-2.

Grace Green, Birdville: The Oregon pledge pitched a two-hitter, struck out 12 and doubled twice as defending 5A state champion Birdville beat Richland 15-1 and won the District 8-5A title. Elena Garcia went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, and Payton Walker homered for Birdville (22-4-1, 13-1).

Jessika Roberts, Forney: Scored the winning run on a two-out wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth as the state's fifth-ranked 5A team beat North Forney 4-3 and won the District 15-5A championship. Forney (28-2, 12-2) finished one game ahead of Lovejoy.

Brittney Clark, Mesquite Poteet: Went 5 for 5 with a home run, three doubles, four runs and two RBIs in a 19-0 win over West Mesquite. It was Clark's 14th home run of the season, which ties her with The Colony's Madison Hirsch and Trinity Cannon of Rockwall-Heath for the most in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Poteet finished third in District 15-5A, one game ahead of North Forney.

Trinity Cannon, Rockwall-Heath: Hit two home runs in an 11-1 win over Mesquite Horn. Madison Leggett homered and had two RBIs for District 11-6A champion Rockwall-Heath (22-5, 13-1), giving her three home runs and 10 RBIs in two games this week.

Abby Buettner, Denton Ryan: The freshman continued to pile up the RBIs, going 4 for 4 with three runs and five RBIs in a 12-3 win over Wichita Falls Rider. Buettner entered the week leading the Dallas-Fort Worth area with 63 RBIs, and she added six RBIs in two games this week.

BASEBALL

Rye Gunter, Coppell: Pitched a five-inning perfect game and struck out 12 in a 14-0 win over Skyline. Coppell scored nine runs in the top of the first.

Tristen Lutz, Arlington Martin: The Texas signee hit two home runs and was 3 for 3 with six RBIs as the state's 11th-ranked 6A team beat Arlington 9-1. That gives Lutz an area-leading nine home runs. District 4-6A leader Martin (22-5-1, 11-1) remained one game ahead of Mansfield.

Ronnie Taylor, Ty Chezem and Cole Maxwell, Allen: Combined on a one-hit shutout in a 9-0 win over Plano East. The win, combined with McKinney's 5-2 loss to Wylie, gives Allen sole possession of first in District 6-6A.

Isaiah Rhodes, McKinney North: Threw a five-inning no-hitter and struck out seven as the state's ninth-ranked 5A team beat Carrollton R.L. Turner 13-0 and stayed tied with Prosper for first in District 14-5A. Conner Fiene was 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs.

Canaan Smith, Rockwall-Heath: The Arkansas signee was 3 for 4 with a grand slam and three runs as the state's eighth-ranked 6A team beat Longview 18-1. Rockwall-Heath (24-6, 11-1) remained tied with Rockwall for first in District 11-6A. Rockwall (26-4, 11-1) beat Mesquite 2-1.

Kole Ramage and Cutter Sippel, Southlake Carroll: They combined to strike out 13, allowing three hits, as the state's fifth-ranked 6A team beat Hurst L.D. Bell 4-2. Carroll (22-7-1, 11-1) has already clinched the District 5-6A title.

Colby Maddox, Trophy Club Byron Nelson: Threw a three-hit shutout in a 1-0 win over Flower Mound Marcus, ranked No. 16 in the state in 6A.

Nate Rombach, Mansfield Legacy: Homered and was 3 for 3 with three runs and two RBIs as Legacy beat Mansfield Lake Ridge 11-2. Legacy stayed tied with Waxahachie for first in District 10-5A.

KEY SHOWDOWNS AWAIT

BASEBALL

Colleyville Heritage, ranked No. 2 in the state in 5A, hit three home runs in a 14-2 win over Fort Worth Carter-Riverside. Jarrett Fairbanks, Carson Hawkins and Jordan Burnett homered as Colleyville Heritage (28-1-1, 12-0) remained tied with defending 5A state champion Grapevine for first in District 8-5A. Grapevine (21-7, 12-0), ranked seventh in the state, beat Fort Worth Eastern Hills 20-0 as Dane Hernandez and Dylan Gonzales homered. Heritage faces Grapevine in the final two district games, next Tuesday and Friday.

SOFTBALL

District 5-6A champion Flower Mound rallied from a 3-0 deficit by scoring five runs in the fourth and 14 runs in the fifth to beat Lewisville 19-3 in softball. It prevented Lewisville from clinching a playoff berth and creates the possibility of a three-way tie between Hebron (8-5 in district), Lewisville (8-6) and Southlake Carroll (7-6) for the final two playoff berths from 5-6A. For that to happen, Carroll would have to beat Hebron on Saturday. They play at 1 p.m. at Hebron. If there is a three-way tie, a tournament would be held to decide which two teams advanced to the playoffs.

Texas Girls Coaches Association opposes 'Tim Tebow bill' to allow home-schooled students to compete in UIL sports

The Texas Girls Coaches Association posted the note below on its website, voicing its opposition to the so-called Tim Tebow bill that could allow home-school athletes to participate in University Interscholastic League events.

TGCA LEGISLATIVE ALERT
April 17, 2017

SB 640 - Regarding Home-School students permitted in UIL activities

SB 640 by Sen. Van Taylor was passed out of the Senate Education Committee by a vote of 8-2, and is scheduled to be heard on the Senate floor on April 18, 2017. We feel this bill will favorably pass out of the Senate. If passed, SB 640 will be submitted to the House Public Education Committee. It is imperative for you to immediately contact your state representative, by phone, and voice a very strong opposition to SB 640.
TGCA is in opposition to opening UIL participation to home school students. This bill would not require the home-school student to meet the same requirements of No Pass No Play, or the same attendance requirements as a public school student. We distinctly oppose legislation that would permit parents to perform eligibility checks. Home-school students would have no restrictions to practice and receive extra-curricular instruction. The local board and campus guidelines would not be applicable to home-school students. Home-school students enrolled in the school district would not be on a level playing field with their public school peers.
TGCA is opposed to SB 640, and we encourage you, as a public school or private school advocate, to contact your state representative by phone and express your opposition to this bill. www.capitol.state.tx.us/Home.aspx will aid you in contacting your state representative.

Despite that, the Texas Senate passed the bill Wednesday. Senate Bill 640, which passed by a vote of 23-8, would end a years-long ban on home-schooled students from playing with public school teammates. It still needs to pass the Texas House.

Sen. Van Taylor, R-Plano, filed the so-called Tim Tebow bill to allow home-school families to pay a fee to participate in University Interscholastic League events. It's named after the former NFL and University of Florida quarterback who was home-schooled in Florida but competed with public-school teammates.

Five former Dallas-area high school stars who could be high picks in the 2018 NFL draft

$

There's a chance that three former Dallas-area players could be selected in the first 10 picks of next week's NFL draft: Myles Garrett (Arlington Martin, Texas A&M), Jamal Adams (Hebron, LSU) and Solomon Thomas (Coppell, Stanford). As good as the Dallas area is in football, that's happened only once before -- in 2009, when quarterback Matthew Stafford (Highland Park), offensive tackle Jason Smith (W.T. White) and receiver Michael Crabtree (Carter) were selected in the top 10.

It probably won't happen next year, but the 2018 NFL draft could feature some local products getting drafted early. Here are five former local high school players who could go in the first three rounds of the 2018 NFL draft.

Malik Jefferson (Mesquite Poteet)

The linebacker made 62 tackles and had 5 1/2 sacks last season for Texas and will be a junior in the fall. He was a second-team All-Big 12 selection and semifinalist for the Butkus Award. He finished up his high school days by playing in the 2015 Under Armour All-American game.

Ronald Jones II (McKinney North)

The running back has rushed for 2,069 yards and 20 touchdowns in his two seasons at USC. He had 1,082 yards rushing last season and was named to the All Pac-12 second team. When he was ripping through defenses in his senior season at McKinney North, Jones rushed for 2,009 yards and 28 touchdowns. He'll be a junior in the fall.

Rawleigh Williams III (Bishop Lynch)

The running back carried the ball 245 times for 1,360 yards and 12 touchdowns last season and was named to All-SEC second team. Williams, who will also be a junior in the fall, was a workhorse at Bishop Lynch. As a senior, he ran for 2,814 yards and 37 touchdowns.

Maea Teuhema (Keller)

The 6-5, 315-pound offensive lineman played in all 12 games last season at LSU and started 10 of them. As a freshman, he was named an ESPN True Freshman All-American, and he will be a junior in the fall. As a senior at Keller, he played in the Under Armour All-America game.

Armani Watts (North Forney)

The Texas A&M defensive back was injured for part of last season but still managed to make 56 tackles and pick off two passes. A year earlier, as a sophomore, Watts had 126 tackles. He'll be a senior in the fall, and if he stays healthy, could make himself into a first-round pick. As a senior at North Forney, he had nine interceptions.

Colleyville Heritage wide receiver Kameron Brown, son of former Cowboys CB Larry Brown, pledges to UCLA

Last year, Colleyville Heritage wide receiver Kameron Brown had a breakout season, recording 748 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns.

With that season came scholarship offers -- a lot of them.

Brown currently has 32, but one apparently stood out above the rest. Brown pledged to UCLA on Monday.

Brown is listed as a four-star recruit by 247 Sports and the No. 12 player in the state of Texas in the Class of 2019.

The son of former TCU and Dallas Cowboys cornerback Larry Brown, Kameron is UCLA's second commitment in the class.

10 things to know about A&M star and likely No. 1 draft pick Myles Garrett, including the time he got pantsed

$

Texas A&M's Myles Garrett, a former Arlington Martin standout, is likely to be the top overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft on Thursday.

Here are 10 things to know about Garrett:

'Unblockable'

Garrett, according to maxpreps.com, had 132 solo tackles and 33.5 sacks in three years of varsity football at Arlington Martin. As a senior, he had 20.5 sacks and 39 tackles for losses. "Right now, he is unblockable," Martin coach Bob Wager told ESPN. "We've had some great players here that have wrecked havoc and done some great things here, but Myles Garrett is so quick off the ball. He is so explosive, and he is elevating everyone's play around him."

Different strokes

Myles Garrett is a different kind of guy. How different? Let us count the ways.

He listens to Marvin Gaye and Journey, not hip hop stars like Drake and Future.

He deleted his Twitter account before the 2015 season at Texas A&M. "I don't need to let people's opinions and other things stick with me ... when I have other things that I can do with my time -- getting better as a person, football player and leader," Garrett told The News' Kate Hairopoulos.

When not terrorizing quarterbacks, he writes poetry and reads books.

He can tell you what the largest carnivorous dinosaur was ... the Spinosaurus aegyptiacus.

A first?

If he is drafted first overall - most mock drafts have Garrett being selected No. 1 by the Cleveland Browns - he would become the first Texas A&M player to go No. 1. Several Aggies have been the No. 2 overall pick - including Broncos All-Pro Von Miller (2011), offensive tackle Luke Joeckel (2013), linebacker Quenin Coryatt (1992), John David Crow (1958) and John Kimbrough (1941).

Athletes run in the family

Garrett's sister, Brea, was a track star at Texas A&M. In fact, she won the NCAA indoor championship in the weight throw in 2014. His brother, Sean Williams, was a star center at Boston College. He became a first-round draft choice and was on the Mavericks' roster in 2010-11.

Big sister

Don't imagine anybody would do it now, but during Myles Garrett's days as a first-grader at Patterson Elementary in Arlington, a couple of older kids on the school bus pulled Myles' pants down. That's when Brea, a fourth-grader at the time, stood up for her little brother.

"Those kids were laughing and joking and having a good time, and one of them 'pantsed' Myles, right there on the bus," Brea said of the juvenile maneuver of pulling one's pants down to reveal underwear. "It was so embarrassing for Myles because he was just so quiet."

Brea patiently waited for the bullies' stop on the bus route.

"I got off with them and, right in front of their house, beat them up," she said. "I got kicked off the bus for doing that. But that day I made it known, 'You don't mess with my brother.' " -- from a story by Brent Zwerneman in the Houston Chronicle on Sept. 24, 2015

A&M's secret recruiting weapon

In the course of Myles' standout career at Arlington Martin, he received scholarship offers from every prominent program, including Alabama and Ohio State. But only Texas A&M had Brea, who was ready to embrace her little brother with home-cooked meals.

"My husband (Lawrence) and I talked about it and wanted to make sure Myles made his own college choice," Audrey Garrett (Myles' mother) said. "And Brea wanted to make sure Myles made his own choice as well.

"The only thing she said was, 'Myles, you can go anywhere you want. You just can't go to Texas.' " -- from a story by Brent Zwerneman in the Houston Chronicle on Sept. 24, 2015

Combine king

If anybody doubted Garrett's ability before the recent NFL combine, he put all doubts to rest with an incredibly athletic performance.

It's a joke!!!

Garrett sent a video message to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones imploring Jones to put together a trade package to move up in the draft (Dallas holds the 28th pick in the first round) and select him.

"I'm speaking to you, Jerry," he said. "Mr. [Jason] Garrett, make it happen. Dak Prescott is leading our team right now. I need you to take Tony Romo, take a couple of picks and give 'em to Cleveland so you can pick me up. I'd love to play in Dallas. Just make it happen."

Garrett later told ESPN that the video was intended to be a joke. "I want to go No. 1," Garrett said. "Whoever that is, if that's Cleveland, I have no problem going up there and playing with them. I'm going to love whatever team and organization that I'm a part of."

Record-setter

As a freshman, Garrett broke the Southeastern Conference record for sacks by a freshman, previously held by South Carolina's Jadeveon Clowney, now a member of the Houston Texans. Clowney's record was eight. Garrett finished his freshman season with 11 sacks.

He wants to sack Tom Brady

When asked at the combine which current NFL quarterback he'd most like to sack, the words came out of his mouth faster than he comes off the edge. Before the question was finished, Garrett said "Tom Brady." Why so intent on taking down Brady? "I'm a Peyton Manning fan," Garrett said.

If he's drafted by Cleveland, Garrett will have to hope the Browns get to the playoffs to have a shot at the defending Super Bowl champions.

Baseball thoughts: Where to go for your source of final-weekend lunacy

$

Baseball's final regular season week is here. It's time to look ahead, look back and look everywhere else.

What you need to know:

The matchup we've been waiting for has arrived

Over the past six weeks, the District 8-5A race has slogged along, with on mega-matchup at stuck at the end of the schedule. Finally, it is here. Rivals Grapevine and Colleyville Heritage will square off in a two-game set this week for the district title. Grapevine is the defending 5A state champion. Colleyville Heritage could be the one team to dethrone them this year. Both teams have held serve throughout district play and enter this week 12-0 in district.

On Friday, in a game that could give one team the outright district title, Heritage will start MLB prospect Alex Scherff. It's unclear who Grapevine will counter with. It could be junior Brett Squires, one of the few players who wasn't a main factor on last year's state championship team but has been a key to the squad's success this season.

The upsets came all at once

In the course of the high school season, baseball's unpredictable nature is usually foreshadowed.

Tournaments early in the season always span the spectrum of results. It happens when teams play six games in three days. Then, early on in district play as teams figure themselves out, a couple games go sideways.

But by the end of district season, we pretty much know who is good and who isn't. The results follow suit.

Then Friday happens and this whole theory is blasted away a hanging curveball. A sampling of Friday's results:

Trophy Club Byron Nelson (now 3-9 in District 5-6A) beat state-ranked Flower Mound Marcus (7-5), 1-0, thanks to a three-hit shutout from Colby Maddox.

McKinney (8-4 in District 6-6A), fresh off sweeping Allen and taking the district lead, gave up three runs on two errors in the sixth to lose to Wylie (3-9).

Justin Northwest (9-3), up to No. 8 in the area rankings, gave up a combined nine runs in the fifth and sixth innings in a 10-6 loss to Azle (2-10).

Forney, which was previously undefeated in District 15-5A -- now 11-1 -- and throwing no hitters left and right, couldn't answer Wylie East (8-4) when it scored in the fifth and took home a 2-1 victory.

There's one week left in the regular season and no one knows anything.

6-6A is the source for your final weekend craziness

Every year we have the procrastinator district, the one that doesn't have anything completed until right before the playoff deadline.

This year it's District 6-6A. Every single one of the district's final two-game series' has district championship or playoff implications.

A 150-word breakdown:

Allen (9-3) vs. Wylie (3-9): If Allen can sweep the district's worst team it'll win the district title. It's not a given. Wylie beat McKinney, the district's No. 2 team as of now, on Friday. McKinney swept Allen earlier this year.

McKinney (8-4) vs. McKinney Boyd (5-7) and Denton Guyer (8-4) vs. Plano West (6-6): One loss from McKinney or Guyer could turn a possible district title into a No. 3 seed and a matchup against a state-ranked team from 5-6A in the first round. One loss from Boyd and it's either out of the playoffs or -- if it's lucky -- stuck in tiebreaker purgatory. West is in a similar boat, but controls its own destiny.

Plano (5-7) vs. Plano East (4-8) - A Plano sweep gives it a good chance at getting in. East needs a sweep and then possibly some fortune in a crazy tiebreaker matrix.

(That was exactly 150 words by the way.)

Judge dismisses lawsuit against UIL that sought to ban transgender wrestler from competing

AUSTIN -- A Travis County judge on Monday dismissed a lawsuit against the University Interscholastic League that sought to ban a transgender wrestler from Euless Trinity from competing.

The judge granted the UIL's plea of jurisdiction, dismissing the case that had been filed nearly two months previously.

The lawsuit, filed by Coppell lawyer and wrestling parent Jim Baudhin, sought to ban 17-year-old Mack Beggs from competing in the regional and state wrestling meets. Beggs is transitioning from female to male and openly identifies as a boy.

Beggs won the 110-pound girls state championship in February amid controversy over his use of testosterone as he made his transition. UIL rules prohibit Beggs from competing against boys.

The lawsuit, which was filed before Beggs' state championship and amended after, had a number of arguments. It alleged Beggs has an unfair advantage, puts every female athlete competing against Beggs at the risk of injury and that Beggs is not protected under the safe harbor provision because he does not have a disease.

In the UIL's plea, it argued the following points:

-It is a government entity and protected by sovereign immunity. For that to be waived, the plaintiff must prove a government officer acted outside its legal authority. The UIL argues that it is following the rules laid out in the state education code.

-Gender dysphoria - the conflict between a person's physical sex and the gender in which he or she identifies -- is a mental disorder diagnosis recognized by the American Psychiatric Association.

-The lawsuit lacks standing. The plantiff in the case is Pratik Khandelwal, whose daughter wrestles for Coppell. The UIL argues Khandelwal's daughter never suffered an actual or threatened injury. It also argued the 2016-17 regular season is finished, so the case is moot.

-The lawsuit is not "ripe." The 2017-18 season has not started, and it's impossible to determine if Khandelwal's daughter and Beggs will wrestle, or even be enrolled in Texas public schools.

-The current law could be changed.

This story will be updated later today.

UIL SOFTBALL PLAYOFFS

TEAMS TO WATCH

Keller (22-4-1): The defending 6A state champion won District 3-6A, finishing one game ahead of Keller Timber Creek. Keller has a potent lineup, with Hanna Jones (.557), Iowa State pledge Kasey Simpson (.521) and Texas Tech pledge Amanda Desario (.507) all hitting better than .500. Dylann Kaderka is 17-3 with a 1.56 ERA in her first season replacing all-state pitcher Kaylee Rogers.

Keller Timber Creek (26-4-1): The state's fifth-ranked 6A team has six players hitting .400 or better, paced by Caitlyn Curlee (.578), Casey Akers (.492) and Oklahoma State pledge Mady Lohman (.461). Madie Green has nine home runs and 39 RBIs, and pitcher Rylee Layton is 18-4. Timber Creek has a win over defending 6A state champion Keller and a tie with defending 5A state champion Birdville.

Plano East (18-10): Plano East shared the District 6-6A title in coach Cindy Mosteller's first season at the school. Mosteller is no rookie coach, though. She has almost 500 career wins, and she led Garland to back-to-back state championships in 2006 and 2007. Bella Konieczka is hitting a team-best .405 with 38 runs, Amy Jensen is hitting .370 with a team-leading five home runs, and pitcher Carson Armijo is 12-4 with a 0.87 ERA.

Forney (28-2): The state's fifth-ranked 5A team started the season 18-0 and went on to win the District 15-5A title. Forney has won six in a row, which includes a 9-2 victory over Lovejoy, ranked fourth in the state.

The Colony (23-6): The Colony has won 14 in a row, outscoring the opposition 145-13 during the winning streak. But if it gets past Frisco Lone Star in the first round, District 14-5A champion The Colony could face state-ranked teams in the next four rounds of the playoffs. Freshman Jayda Coleman, an Oklahoma pledge, leads the Dallas-Fort Worth area in hitting at .698. Half of Coleman's 60 hits have gone for extra bases, and she has 56 runs and 40 stolen bases in 29 games. Kansas pledge Madison Hirsch is tied for the area home run lead with 14 and is hitting .570 with 59 RBIs. Iowa State pledge Karlie Charles is 16-2 with a 1.18 ERA.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Calie Burris and Grace Green, Birdville: Burris, an Abilene Christian signee, is 8-3 as a pitcher and is hitting .507 with nine home runs and 29 RBIs for defending 5A state champion Birdville. Green, committed to Oregon, is 13-0 with a 0.66 ERA and is hitting .413 for the state's top-ranked team.

Trinity Cannon and Madison Leggett, Rockwall-Heath: This duo has combined for 93 RBIs, 73 runs and 47 extra-base hits. Cannon is tied for the area home run lead with 14 and is hitting .453. Leggett is hitting .537 with eight home runs for District 11-6A champion Rockwall-Heath (22-5).

Alyssa DiFiore and JoJo McRae, Lovejoy: DiFiore provides the power, leading the state's fourth-ranked 5A team with seven home runs, 13 doubles and 48 RBIs. McRae, an All-American who has signed with Maryland, is tops on the team in batting average (.592), runs (48) and stolen bases (39).

Kendall Fritz and Brooke Makemson, Frisco Wakeland: Wakeland won District 13-5A, which includes the state's 25th-ranked team (Frisco Centennial) and a 2016 5A state semifinalist (Frisco). Fritz, committed to Nevada, is 14-4 with a 1.42 ERA. Makemson, a Louisiana Tech signee, leads Wakeland in batting average (.537), runs (36), doubles (15), home runs (nine) and RBIs (48).

Tatum Boyd and Sierra Lange, Plano West: Boyd is hitting a team-best .392 with five home runs for a 24-4 team that is ranked No. 6 in the state in 6A. A year after leading the D-FW area with a 0.56 ERA, Lange has come back and posted a 0.77 ERA. The George Washington signee is 15-4 with 187 strikeouts in 127 innings.

LOWER SEEDS THAT COULD MAKE A RUN

Plano: Plano is the No. 3 seed from District 6-6A, but it wouldn't be surprising if it makes a long playoff run. Plano swept 6-6A top seed Plano West, ranked No. 6 in the state, as Bronte Rhoden pitched shutouts in both games.

Mesquite Poteet: The No. 3 seed from District 15-5A has wins over 2016 5A state semifinalist Frisco and a trio of state-ranked 5A teams -- No. 23 Burleson Centennial, No. 5 Forney and No. 4 Lovejoy. Brittney Clark is hitting .604 and shares the area home run lead with 14. Stevenson, committed to Virginia, is 20-7 with a 2.02 ERA and an area-leading 306 strikeouts. Stevenson has hit six home runs after leading the area with 17 home runs in 2016.

Frisco: A year after reaching the state tournament and finishing 31-3, Frisco is 17-7 and the No. 3 seed from District 13-5A. But Frisco still has ace pitcher Maddie MacGrandle, a Texas A&M signee who is 17-5 with a 0.86 ERA and 240 strikeouts in 130 innings.

BEST FIRST-ROUND MATCHUPS

Flower Mound vs. Wylie: There's probably not a more dangerous No. 4 seed in D-FW than Wylie, which is ranked No. 6 in the area in 6A and has wins over No. 2 Plano and No. 5 Plano East. Michelle Hollon, Bailey Brenek, Grace Meador, Kendall Jennings and Megan Lesko are all hitting better than .430 for 5-6A champion Flower Mound, which averaged 11 runs per game in district.

Frisco Centennial vs. Prosper: Two sluggers who don't always get a lot of pitches to hit will go head-to-head in this best-of-3 series. Yasmeen Williams has seven home runs and 33 RBIs in only 56 official at-bats and 22 games for District 13-5A runner-up Frisco Centennial. Texas A&M signee Abby Smith is hitting .444 with six home runs and 28 RBIs in 63 official at-bats for Prosper.

Denton Ryan vs. Fort Worth Boswell: Denton Ryan freshman Abby Buettner leads the area in RBIs -- with 69 in 28 games. Buettner is hitting .636 with 12 home runs for District 5-5A runner-up Ryan (19-9). Boswell has a win over District 6-5A champion Northwest Eaton.

Twitter reaction: DeSoto's Todd Peterman should go where he's 'celebrated' not 'tolerated'

DeSoto football players meet with superintendent Tuesday, voice strong support for coach Todd Peterman

The day after the DeSoto ISD school board met and took no action on the status of football coach Todd Peterman, standout junior defensive back Byron Hanspard Jr. told The Dallas Morning News that players met with superintendent David Harris, athletic director Larry Davis and an assistant coach to ask questions.

When asked what Harris had to say, Hanspard replied, "No answers."

"We don't have a statement at this time," Harris told The News when contacted Tuesday, further adding to the mystery of Peterman's job status.

Hanspard, a top-20 area recruit who is committed to Arkansas, posted video of DeSoto players sitting in the school district board room Tuesday. He included the hashtag #KeepCoachPeterman.

"We're all 10 toes behind Coach Peterman. We love and support him 110 percent," Hanspard said.

About 30 to 40 players were at Monday night's board meeting to support Peterman, who led DeSoto to a 16-0 record and the Class 6A Division II state championship last season.

The outpouring of support for Peterman, in his second year leading the program, has been immense. Current and former players have Tweeted their support in the past 24 hours when it became clear that Peterman's job might have been in jeopardy.

Earlier Monday, four of the seven board trustees were leaning toward firing Peterman, with the superintendent in favor of keeping the coach.

No reason was given for Peterman's potential exit.

Board president Carl Sherman Jr. declined all questions following the meeting, which ended just after 11:30 p.m.

Sherman Jr. did, however, said this in a statement to The News:

"We've received information that warrants further consideration, and we've directed the Superintendent to conduct additional due diligence right away. We will release additional information as quickly as we possibly can."

Meet all of the D-FW players who may get picked in the NFL draft

$
0
0

A potentially "glorious day" draws near for the Dallas-Fort Worth high school football scene, with the start of the 2017 NFL draft set for Thursday night in Philadelphia. This year's class features its share of local products, but it could even see as many as three locals come off the board among the top 10 picks.

Here is a look at players with local ties who could hear their name called this weekend, from the likely No. 1 overall pick (Arlington Martin's Myles Garrett) to possible late-round selections (like Cedar Hill's Quincy Adeboyejo):

Myles Garrett | DE | Arlington Martin | Texas A&M
Projected round: 1

Garrett, widely considered the best overall prospect in this year's draft -- a status seemingly bestowed upon him the second the 2016 draft ended -- is expected to go to the Cleveland Browns with the No. 1 overall pick Thursday night. The No. 1 player in SportsDay's area recruit rankings for the Class of 2014, Garrett went on to pile up 31 sacks in three seasons with the Texas A&M Aggies, breaking a few school records in the process. The 6-foot-4, 270-plus-pound defensive end battled a nagging leg injury last fall but still racked up 15 tackles for loss in 10 games.

Jamal Adams | S | Hebron | LSU | Projected round: 1

Adams, the second-ranked recruit in the area (behind Garrett) in 2014, is poised to be a top-10 pick Thursday and will provide a leadership boost to whichever club he joins. The 6-foot, 214-pound safety was dubbed "the best prospect in the draft" by NFL.com's Bucky Brooks earlier this month. How's that for praise, huh? Demonstrating the abilities to play down in the box and out in coverage, Adams made 76 total tackles (7.5 for loss) to go with an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery as a junior at LSU last season. Adams picked off four passes as a sophomore.

Solomon Thomas | DE/DT | Coppell | Stanford
Projected round: 1

Rounding out the D-FW area's "Big 3" of 2014 is Coppell's Solomon Thomas, who also is considered a likely top-10 pick. Considered a "tweener" by some, Thomas spent a lot of time playing inside on the Stanford defensive line but is viewed as an edge rusher because of his size (6-3, 273). Thomas racked up eight sacks last season as a redshirt sophomore to go with 15 tackles for loss. His 62 total tackles led the Cardinal, a rare feat for a defensive lineman.

Davis Webb | QB | Prosper | Cal/Texas Tech
Projected round: 2

The transfer from Texas Tech threw for 4,295 yards and 37 touchdowns in 2016 with California, following in the footsteps of 2016 No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff. Pete Prisco of CBSSports.com predicted in his latest mock draft that Webb will sneak into the first round, going at No. 25 to the Houston Texans.

Daeshon Hall | DE | Lancaster | Texas A&M
Projected round: 2-3

The guy opposite Garrett on the Aggies' D-line, Hall is an intriguing physical specimen (6-5, 266) coming off back-to-back seasons of double-digit tackles for loss. Hall made Pete Prisco's "Better-Than Team" -- a list of 20 prospects the CBSSports.com analyst believes could be steals in the draft. "He isn't Garrett, but he's a damn good player," one NFC personnel man told Prisco.

Deatrich Wise | DE | Hebron | Arkansas
Projected round: 4-5

Adams is the Hebron name that is on everyone's tongue but Deatrich Wise is going to be a nice find for some team in the later rounds. Actually, Wise and Adams have more in common than just their high school. Both of their fathers also played in the NFL as Deatrich Wise Sr. was a ninth-round pick back in 1988 by the Seattle Seahawks. Wise has all the physical attributes, long arms and huge hands. A little polishing could make him an impact player in the NFL.

Howard Wilson | CB | DeSoto | Houston
Projected round: 5-6

Wilson reeled in five interceptions in 2016 to rank second in the American Athletic Conference and 13th nationally. Standing 6-1 and 184 pounds, Wilson is described by NFL.com as a "smooth athlete with excellent length who has a long history of making plays on the football." In his Mock Draft 9.0, Chris Burke of Sports Illustrated projected Wilson as a third-round pick to the Cowboys.

Devonte Fields | DE | Arlington Martin | Louisville/TCU
Projected round: 6-7

A star alongside Garrett on Arlington Martin's defensive line in 2011, Fields has taken a completely different path to the NFL draft. The defensive end-turned-outside linebacker broke onto the scene as a freshman at TCU, taking home Big 12 defensive player of the year honors after a 10-sack season. Fields is coming off a six-sack season at Louisville, the school he ended up at after a suspension from TCU and a stop at Trinity Valley Community College.

Jerod Evans | QB | Mansfield | Virginia Tech
Projected round: 5

Evans is a guy who looks the part of an NFL quarterback but isn't quite there yet as far as his development goes. In fact, an AFC regional scout called it "a shame" that he came out this year because he would've benefited with another year under his belt. Even though a team that needs a quarterback right now may not look to him, he could be a guy that sits and develops behind an established starter.

Kyle Fuller | OL | Wylie | Baylor | Projected round: 5

Fuller is a guy who's size really sticks out when looking at him but with that, his athletic ability takes a bit of a hit. He was a mainstay for Baylor at the middle of their offensive line and improved every season in Waco.

Seth Russell | QB | Garland | Baylor
Projected round: 7-FA

Russell comes into this draft fighting the negative perception of Baylor quarterbacks recently (looking at you RG3 and Bryce Petty) but when looking at him on an island, he makes a good impression. Of course, he had the big neck injury in 2015 but he showed last year that the injruy was a thing in the past... until he hurt his ankle. When on the field he's been productive. Now, he's just gotta show that he can stay on the field.

Quincy Adeboyejo | WR | Cedar Hill | Ole Miss
Projected round: 6-7

Adeboyejo is a fast guy who was never really the primary target at Mississippi. Catching the ball has also been a question mark at times, which is pretty important for a wide receiver. He's more of a Terrance Williams type catcher, letting the ball come to his body rather than going out to get it. Then again, Williams seems to be doing alright in the NFL so there is hope for Adeboyejo.

Sam Tevi | OL | Euless Trinity | Utah
Projected round: 6-7

Tevi is Mr. Versatility. He started his college career as a defensive lineman and then made the switch to offense and has since played both right and left tackle. He did have a back injury which, by the nature of that injury may raise some red flags, but he's a pretty big guy who has shown he's all about the team and can do whatever is needed.

Josh Carraway | DE | Flower Mound Marcus | TCU
Projected round: 6-7

Talk about coming in riding high, Josh Carraway enters the NFL draft with two consecutive first-time All-Big 12 nods and leading his team last year with eight sacks. He isn't the strongest guy but has speed that is off the charts. One NFC director of personnel said that "you can't coach his speed" and it'll be up to coaches to help him improve in other areas. He has some tools though to be successful.

Noble Nwachukwu | DL | Wylie | West Virginia
Projected round: 5-6

Here is a guy that has great athletic ability but he took a step back before coming out for the draft. In 2015, he had 13 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks but last year those totals went down to seven tackles for loss and four sacks. He's shown that he has ability. Now he must show consistency.

Charles Walker | DT | South Garland | Oklahoma
Projected round: 6-7

Walker has been a productive player but he has two red flags: He's inconsistent and he's had a history of concussions. Walker also just recently learned that he battled depression all throughout college. On the field though, he has ability. He played well at the beginning of last season before shutting it down and preparing for his NFL career.

One baseball district could have three-way tie at top or for fourth place after Friday

$

No baseball district will have more at the stake on Friday than 6-6A.

Allen can win the district outright with a win over Wylie but a loss could send it into a possible three-way tie with McKinney and Denton Guyer for the title.

Then there's the matter of the final playoff spot.

Right now, Plano and Plano West both sit tied for fourth at 6-7 in the district. McKinney Boyd is one game behind at 5-8.

If Plano loses to Plano East (4-9), Plano West loses to Guyer (9-4) and Boyd beats McKinney (9-4), a three-way tiebreaker tournament would be on the horizon.

Plano split its season series with both Boyd and West, while West swept the season series against Boyd.

West would get a bye because of the series win, forcing Boyd and Plano to play an elimination game.

The winner of that would then play West for the final playoff spot.

As spring ball hits full swing, how will area powers replace dynamic quarterbacks?

$

This week marked the first days of spring ball for the most teams. With that comes the first evaluation period for teams trying to find replacements for the stars of years past. For many area powers, those replacements will come at the sport's most important position: quarterback.

For some, the heir apparent is already set. For others, the answers are more vague.

Allen

Mitchell Jonke is gone to Brown after throwing for 2,530 yards, 25 touchdowns and six interceptions last year. In his place will likely be rising junior Grant Tisdale, who played sparingly last season but showed enough signs over the past year to already receive scholarship offers from Mississippi State, SMU and Texas Tech. Allen has a lot of young talent. If Tisdale can adjust to the role quickly, look for Allen to continue making deep runs in the playoffs this year and next.

Cedar Hill

The team with what might be the highest ceiling has the murkiest outlook at quarterback. Notre Dame signee Avery Davis departs, as does backup Garret McGuire, leaving Cedar Hill without a player on its roster who has thrown a varsity pass. New coach Carlos Lynn will spend the spring trying to determine who will lead the offense next season.

Colleyville Heritage

One of the most prolific quarterbacks in the state last year, Cam Roane will graduate this spring and head to San Diego State. He'll leave behind two bonafide FBS receivers in Ke'Von Ahmad and Kameron Brown (who recently committed to UCLA). Those two will surely help whoever will take over. Jagger LaRoe could end up being the guy. LaRoe transferred to Heritage this offseason after leading Bishop Lynch to a TAPPS state title.

DeSoto

SportsDayHS offensive player of the year Shawn Robinson is already at TCU, but the cupboard isn't bare. Courtney Douglas has waited behind a number of FBS players for an opportunity show what he can do. Now he has that chance. Early indications are that he's up to the task. By the time the season is over, expect Douglas to have multiple FBS offers.

Frisco Lone Star

Jason Shelley spent four years as Lone Star's quarterback, leaving about the deepest void as anyone. But Lone Star has M.J. Rivers, a transfer from Prestonwood, who has a similar skill set to Shelley. If Rivers can make the adjustment quickly this spring, Lone Star should be one of the area's top 5A teams yet again.

Todd Peterman remains as DeSoto football coach as baffled community, dysfunctional school board ask questions

DESOTO -- As music pumped through the Eagle Stadium speakers and a smattering of spectators watched from the stands Tuesday afternoon, the DeSoto football team's fifth spring practice looked like business as usual.

But there's some very unfinished business looming over one of the state's top football programs. A day after DeSoto ISD trustees met in executive session for three hours to discuss whether to fire the coach who led DeSoto to its first state football title, it was uncertain whether Todd Peterman would remain the head coach.

It's also uncertain why some of the trustees might not want to retain Peterman, who was on the field with the players Tuesday and talking about prospects for the upcoming season. Peterman, an assistant for DeSoto for seven years before taking over as head coach in 2015, led the Eagles to a 16-0 record last season.

As midnight approached Monday, the DeSoto ISD trustees emerged from the long closed session and said no action would be taken that night on Peterman's job status. The announcement stunned the packed board room, but the board has shown some degree of dysfunction in the past.

Last year, the state's Legislative Budget Board was critical of the trustees.

"DeSoto ISD's board has an atmosphere of distrust among board members, resulting in ineffective communication, which compromises the Board of Trustees' ability to openly deliberate issues and effectively govern the district," the report read.

After the late-night announcement that no action would be taken, the meeting was quickly adjourned. Board president Carl Sherman Jr. then released a statement:

"We've received information that warrants further consideration, and we've directed the superintendent to conduct additional due diligence right away. We will release additional information as quickly as we possibly can."

There was no new statement from the board on Tuesday, but supporters of the coach continued to raise their voices, just as they did at Monday's meeting. At the school, about two dozen players met with DeSoto ISD Superintendent David Harris and athletic director Larry Davis.

"We're all 10 toes behind Coach Peterman," said DeSoto junior defensive back Byron Hanspard Jr., who posted a video on Twitter of players sitting in the board room waiting to meet with the superintendent. "We love and support him 110 percent."

Terry Orr, a former Washington Redskins receiver who has had three sons play football for DeSoto (including one on the current coaching staff), calls the situation a "national embarrassment" for the school. He said he "prays" that this is not an issue of Peterman being white in a predominantly black school district.

Sherman, in a statement to KDFW-TV (Channel 4), vehemently denied that race has anything to do with it.

"Let me be clear: No decisions that we make are ever based on race," Sherman said. "That is not the way we do business. Never has been. Never will be. And for anyone to suggest otherwise is disgusting and unacceptable."

What issues the trustees have with Peterman, however, are unknown. And at least one school board member said that until Monday, he had no idea Peterman's job was in jeopardy.

"It just came up," Jerry Hall said. "You hear rumors all the time, but when I walked into the meeting I had no idea that anything was coming until I saw all the people there. Then, the Twitter feed was just blowing up."

Hall said that as far as he knows, Peterman's record is spotless. Peterman, who declined to talk about his job status Tuesday, did acknowledge that he was disciplined for using smokeless tobacco on the sideline during his first game as head coach in 2015. He has not done it since, he said.

Three board members -- Hall, Aubrey Hooper and Karen Daniel -- are up for re-election on May 6, and the next school board meeting isn't scheduled until May 8. Unless the district calls a special meeting, that's the earliest the board could bring up Peterman's situation again.

Hall was the only current member of the board to speak on the record about the meeting. Several other board members didn't return calls seeking comment.

A few DeSoto ISD school board candidates criticized the current board, not just for its actions against Peterman but because of communications issues within the district.

"This isn't a good look for us," said Tiffany Clark, who is one of Hall's opponents in Place 4. "This is the thing: The fact that the school board has dived into this without any previous notice or discussion is a concern. They need to be as transparent as possible."

On the field Tuesday, Peterman was smiling and upbeat. He said this spring is easier for the players after the state championship.

"All they've heard and they've read, at least for the decade that I've been here, is that they were the most talented team in Texas to never win state," Peterman said. "The kids know now that they can do it."

Peterman said the team's motto last year was "Let's go find out." This year's motto, as selected by the players, is "Let's go find out -- the sequel."

It's unknown when Peterman will find out if he will be a part of it. Orr, who was at the meeting Monday night along with about 40 football players and a large group of Peterman supporters, said he doesn't understand what is going on.

"He is a standup guy," Orr said of Peterman. "They wanted to increase academic achievement, and he's done that. He's had the most academic all-state team members in the history of the school, so he's done that. His team has just been awarded the most scholarships ever, and that's millions of dollars that the community can save.

"I'm baffled by this. I mean, what else do you want him to do?"

Staff writer Greg Riddle contributed to this report.

Five D-FW storylines for NFL draft: Will it be as easy as 1-2-3 for former area stars?

The first round of the 2017 NFL draft will have a decidedly D-FW area flavor, as perhaps three area high school products come off the board in the first 10 picks. Here are some of the top storylines.

1. Are the Browns really gonna mess this up?

Former Arlington Martin and Texas A&M superstar defensive end has been projected to be the top overall pick for months now. Garrett is considered a can't-miss pass rusher for a league that values pass rushers almost as much as the quarterbacks they chase.

But as the draft nears, there are more and more rumblings that the Cleveland Browns, who hold the first overall pick, are thinking of taking North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubisky.

CBS analyst Dane Brugler, on SportsDay's Ballzy podcast, had this to say: I think Myles Garrett, he's the clear-cut No. 1 guy. I think 31 teams would draft him number one overall and then you have the Browns, picking No. 1. Who knows what they might do? They're strongly considering Trubisky there. A source who has never let me down before told me you cannot rule it out. There are certain voices in that building who really want Trubisky and they don't think he'll be there at 12. He won't be there at 12.

It's true. The Browns do need a quarterback. They always need a quarterback. But they might be able to land Trubisky later in the first round. Most likely, they pick Garrett. But hey, they are the Browns.

Possible 1-2-3 punch for the area?

Could former area stars go 1-2-3 in Thursday's first round? San Francisco holds the second pick and there are plenty of mocks that have the 49ers taking former Coppell and Stanford star defensive end Solomon Thomas.

And some mocks have the Chicago Bears taking former Hebron/LSU safety Jamal Adams with the third pick. More about Adams below.

As for Thomas, San Francisco, like Cleveland, needs a quarterback but is unlikely to spend the No. 2 overall pick on a QB. Thomas, who is 6-3 and 273 pounds and also played on the inside on Stanford's defensive line, would be a safe pick for a team that needs help in a lot of areas. As a red-shirt sophomore for the Cardinal, Thomas had eight sacks, 15 tackles behind the line of scrimmage and 62 total stops, which led the team.

Thomas' personality is a plus as well. "He was the most gifted natural leader I've ever been around," said Joe McBride, who is now athletic director of the Coppell ISD. "What I remember is his love and care for his teammates. How he was the Mama Bear. He just mothered and loved the whole team and really the whole community."

3. Safeties don't go before corners ... or do they?

Every draft is different, but there are some things that generally happen every year. Franchise quarterbacks and great pass rushers are usually valued above all players. And in the position-by-position pecking order, lock-down cover cornerbacks might be third. Safeties ... not so much. But former Hebron and LSU star Jamal Adams is no ordinary safety.

Adams likely will be drafted before any cornerbacks come off the board in the first round. If a recent ESPN mock draft holds true, Adams will go third overall to the Chicago Bears. Who ever lands the 6-0, 214-pounder will be getting a surpremely talented athlete. Adams, who ran a 4.38 40-yard dash at LSU's pro day, also played running back, wide receiver and returned kicks at Hebron. He's a run stopper, and he can cover.

Hebron coach Brian Brazil considered lining Adams up at tailback and handing him the ball 30 times per game, but he knew that Adams' future was at safety. The son of former NFL running back George Adams made 138 tackles and had seven interceptions in his final two seasons with Hebron.

4. Could two former Texas Tech QBs be early round picks?

Texas Tech quarterbacks, despite putting up monster statistics for the Red Raiders' high-flying offenses over the years, just haven't made an impact in the pros. But that could change.

Patrick Mahomes, Tech's sensational playmaker might be the best athlete at the position in this year's draft. He's likely to be a first-round pick.

Davis Webb, a former star at Prosper, started at Tech before transferring to Cal. Webb is projected as a second rounder.

CBS analyst Dane Brugler talked about Webb on the DMN's Ballzy podcast: These quarterbacks are gonna get pushed up. Davis Webb, D-FW native from Prosper. I'd love to see him in the fourth round, but he's gonna go in the second because these quarterbacks are gonna get propped up.

At least one mock draft, that by Pete Prisco of CBSSports.com, had Webb sneaking into the first round at No. 25 to the Houston Texans.

So that's why the Texans didn't make a play for Tony Romo.

5. Double dips for some area schools?

Some area schools could be sending more than one player to the NFL if draft projections hold.

Arlington Martin: Defensive end Myles Garrett could be the first overall pick and his former teammate, defensive end Devonte Fields, who starred at TCU and then Louisville, is projected to be drafted in rounds 6-7. Tap here to read more about the two Martin teammates.

Hebron: Safety Jamal Adams is expected to be among the top 10 players picked and likely will go higher, perhaps as high as No. 3 overall. Deatrick Wise, a defensive end who later played at Arkansas, is projected to be drafted in rounds 4-5.

Wylie: Kyle Fuller, an offensive lineman who later played for Baylor, is projected to be taken in the fifth round. Noble Nwachukwu, a defensive lineman who played in college for West Virginia, is projected to be picked in rounds 5-6.
