Water polo, lacrosse growing rapidly; why former is likely to become UIL sport first

Since the University Interscholastic League added wrestling for the 1998-99 school year, the governing body's lineup of sports has stayed the same. The drought of new sports, however, seems destined to end in the water.

Water polo, a sport that this weekend is holding its state tournament in Lewisville, is expected to become the next UIL sport. It's not a matter of if, UIL deputy director Jamey Harrison said, it's a matter of when.

It could come as soon as the 2018-19 school year.

"Everyone I've talked to is really excited about it," said Troy Goddard, coach of the Flower Mound boys and girls teams that will each compete for a state title this weekend. "It should be huge for the growth of the sport."

Water polo is already growing rapidly. Southlake Carroll coach Dan Balint, whose boys and girls teams are also competing this weekend, said that about 50 schools statewide have added water polo teams over the last five years.

A UIL survey of superintendents last fall also showed a surge of support for the sport. Only 21 percent of superintendents in Classes 5A and 6A favored adding water polo in 2014, but two years later, 43 percent of those superintendents believed it should be a UIL sport.

The momentum has carried water polo near the 50 percent threshold that generally prompts the UIL to add a sport. Next month, the UIL could add water polo as a one-year pilot program or as a permanent sport, with either scenario starting with the 2018-19 school year.

Lacrosse, which will crown its girls state champions this weekend and boys next weekend, is also growing rapidly. The Texas High School Lacrosse League has expanded from 90 to 163 teams over the last eight years.

But while lacrosse has nearly as many teams statewide as water polo, it won't become a UIL sport anytime soon. In the fall survey, 81 percent of 5A and 6A superintendents were against adding it.

One reason, not surprisingly, is money.

Lacrosse would be more expensive for schools than water polo, so it will need more participation than water polo to win over superintendents. Most of the lacrosse programs are in the state's four major metropolitan areas -- Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio and Austin -- but there are few teams in other parts of Texas.

"We don't have the numbers, and that's the driver of whether lacrosse will become a UIL sport," said Ray Martin, who is on the Texas High School Lacrosse League's board of directors and once served as commissioner. "We'll have to expand tremendously across the state."

Lacrosse is still expected to become a UIL sport eventually, but when it does, one of its big challenges will be finding qualified coaches. Derek Thomson, who has coached Highland Park for 14 years and played for lacrosse powerhouse Duke, estimates that 90 percent of the high school lacrosse coaches in Texas are not teachers. The UIL requires that varsity coaches be full-time employees of the school district.

Many of the state's top lacrosse teams wouldn't be eligible for a UIL title anyway. This week's eight-team girls Division I state bracket includes five private schools that aren't UIL members. Two of the last five Division I boys state champs, Episcopal School of Dallas and St. Mark's, are also not UIL members.

Water polo will have a similar challenge because many of the powerhouse programs are at private schools. St. Mark's coach Mihai Oprea, whose team has won the last three TISCA boys state water polo titles, is already preparing for that. He's encouraging more private schools to create programs to beef up the state tournament for those schools, which began last year.

Water polo and lacrosse would face similar challenges after becoming UIL sports, but the challenge for water polo would be much smaller. That's because the costs are so minimal.

"We've got the pools," Goddard said. "You just need a couple of goals and a ball."

There is also an abundant supply of potential players. Some programs have athletes who compete in the sport exclusively, but most water polo players are also members of the school's swim team.

"I think they really enjoy it. It's a nice cross-training for them," Balint said. "It's like good athletes in any sport. They want to play multiple sports."

Mysterious situation surrounding DeSoto coach Todd Peterman expected to be resolved on Monday

$

The job status of DeSoto head football coach Todd Peterman, left hanging since the DeSoto ISD's board of trustees meeting nearly two weeks ago, is expected to be resolved Monday night.

That's when the trustees will meet again, and the agenda calls for trustees to take action on teacher and administrator contracts. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at the DeSoto ISD's Dalton L. James Administrator Board Room.

Board members have not made public comments regarding Peterman, who led DeSoto to its first state title in December, since the April 24 meeting. The board met in closed session that evening to discuss teacher and administrator contracts, which would include whether to renew Peterman's contract as head coach. After a three-hour closed session, the board announced that it would take no action that night.

On April 28, DeSoto ISD superintendent David Harris said in a news release that "delaying contract action has allowed DeSoto ISD administration the opportunity to address questions and concerns that have come to the district's attention regarding some personnel related matters."

He said the administration had reviewed those questions and concerns and that they had been resolved. Some of those questions might've surrounded an anonymous handwritten note that was sent to the UIL in December and came to light in a WFAA.com story on April 28.

The note alleged that Peterman recruited players, changed grades and allowed players to stay at his house. Peterman denied the allegations and called the letter "comical."

The letter was forwarded to the DeSoto ISD because the UIL's investigation process stipulates that the school investigate on its own first. The UIL then examines any evidence to determine penalties or whether it should investigate further. Neither Peterman nor the UIL have heard anything from the DeSoto ISD regarding the letter.

At the April 24 board of trustees meeting, community members expressed support for Peterman. Terry Orr, a former Washington Redskins receiver who has had three sons play football for DeSoto (including one on the current coaching staff), called the situation a "national embarrassment" for the school and said he prayed that it's not an issue of Peterman being white in a predominantly black school district.

Board of trustees president Carl Sherman Jr. had vehemently denied that race has anything to do with it. "No decisions that we make are ever based on race," Sherman said in a statement to KDFW-TV (Channel 4).

About 40 football players attended the trustees meeting to support the coach, who was a DeSoto assistant for seven years and was elevated to head coach before the 2015 season. Peterman has a two-year record of 22-6, which includes last year's 16-0 finish that included the Class 6A Division II championship.

Baseball playoffs: LSU signee throws 5-inning no-hitter for Coppell; reigning 6A champ Jesuit holds off Sachse

GRAND PRAIRIE -- John Kodros came close to pitching a perfect game but in the end had to settle for a no-hitter.

The 6-4 Coppell left-hander (10-1) dominated Garland Naaman Forest, and the Cowboys rolled to a 13-0 victory, stopped after five innings by the mercy rule, in the opener of a best-of-3 Class 6A Region II bi-district playoff series Thursday night at AirHogs Park.

Kodros' bid for a perfect game ended when Nate Vanmaanen drew a one-out walk in the final inning. Two strikeouts later, the LSU signee was accepting no-hitter congratulations from teammates.

"I've never had a perfect game, and that's the closest I've come," said Kodros, who lost his balance delivering ball four to Vanmaanen. "It was still a close pitch. But I'll go to bed tonight, get up tomorrow and it will be fine."

Coppell (23-9), No. 5 in SportsDay's final Class 6A area ranking and champion of District 9-6A, had a 10-hit attack that included three triples. Naaman Forest (14-15), fourth-seed from District 10-6A, used three pitchers to try and slow the Cowboys.

Both teams are coming off fourth-round playoff runs in 2016.

Coppell grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Blake Jackson's triple to right-center drove in the first run and he alertly tagged on an awkward catch of a wind-blown pop-up to second base to make it 2-0.

The lead swelled to 9-0 in the second inning. The Cowboys put four hits together beginning with an RBI double Cody Masters and ending on a two-run single from Gage Garber. Jackson and designated hitter Austin Goss also had run-scoring hits.

Mason Holt connected on Coppell's third triple, this one off the wall in left-center, to drive in three runs in a four-run third as the lead ballooned to 13-0.

The no-hitter for Kodros is his first this season and the third of his career. He struck out 11 and needed only 63 pitches.

"John's running sinker and his slider were very good," said Coppell coach Kendall Clark.

Naaman Forest coach Carey Willingham was impressed with Kodros' poise: "He seemed very mature and pitched with finesse. He was able to put the ball where he wanted it."

Based on Naaman Forest's playoff run last year, Willingham said it would be a mistake to count his team out.

"My kids will battle and feed off what we did last year," he said.

Game 2 is scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday at AirHogs Park. If a third game is needed, it would be played Saturday afternoon.

The series winner advances to face the Conroe Oak Ridge-Tyler Lee bi-district victor.

Jesuit 3, Sachse 2: Michael Schoettmer's sacrifice fly broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the sixth, and reigning Class 6A state champion Jesuit went on to win Game 1 of a best-of-3 bi-district series.

Jesuit (22-11) added a second run in the sixth as Jacob Palisch scored on a passed ball to make it 3-1. Sachse scored a run on an error in the bottom of the sixth but stranded the potential tying run at second base.

Heath Vankirk pitched a complete game for Jesuit. He allowed four hits and two runs while striking out five.

Jesuit's Julian Colombo was 2 for 3 and scored a run, and Alex Lengyel was 2 for 3 with an RBI. David Renning led off the bottom of the first with a home run to give Sachse (18-12) a 1-0 lead, and he finished with two hits and two walks.

WACO -- Dallas-area schools captured four championships Saturday at the TAPPS state track and field meet at Clyde Hart Track & Field Stadium.

Boys teams from Dallas Covenant, Colleyville Covenant and Trinity Christian-Cedar Hill captured the Class 3A, 4A and 5A titles, respectively, with each of those school's girls teams finishing second. DeSoto Canterbury's girls won in Class A, while its boys placed third.

In total, D-FW had at least one top three team in 11 of the 12 class ratings (A-6A boys and girls). The lone exception was girls 2A, where Ovilla Christian finished fourth.

Class 6A

The Argyle Liberty Christian girls had a strong showing, winning six running events and finishing eight points out of first place. Izzy Hopkins won the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dashes and ran the second leg in the 4x100 relay, which the team won along with the 4x200. Texas A&M pledge Maddi Willet anchored both relays and finished third in the 100. Elizabeth Reneau won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200.

The Bishop Dunne boys started the morning by holding off Tomball Concordia Lutheran to win the 4x100 relay en route to a second-place team finish. Three Dunne runners finished in the top four in the 100, with Marquez Beason winning by edging Jack Savage of TCA-Addison in a photo finish.

Class 5A

TC-Cedar Hill's boys won five running finals, including all three relays, on their way to a state championship. Chris Ford anchored the 4x100 win. Ford also won the 400 in dominant fashion. Aron Starks held on to win the 800.

Dallas Christian finished second to TC-Cedar Hill in the 4x100, and Jacob Rippy won the 100 and finished third in the 200.

Chasady Johnson of TC-Cedar Hill coasted to an easy win in the girls 100 and pulled out a victory in the 400 at the line.

Class 4A

Merrick McHenry and Jack Reed finished first and second in the 110-meter hurdles for Colleyville Covenant's title-winning boys. McHenry and Reed also led the team's victory in the 4x100 relay. Reed ran the first leg, while McHenry ran anchor.

Brooks King won the 100 and ran first leg for Flower Mound Coram Deo in its 4x200 relay win.

Colleyville Covenant's Kathleen Feuerborn nearly won both the girls 100- and 300-meter hurdles. Feuerborn wasn't challenged in the 300 but lost by .13 in the 100. Teammate Rebecca Moore took control of the 400 in the final 50 meters and coasted to victory.

Arlington Grace Prep's Aliyah Trotter blazed to comfortable wins in the 100 and 200. Trotter ran a blistering 12.07 in the 100.

Class 3A

Dallas Covenant had three boys finish in the top four in the 1,600. Caleb Jones won, Hogan Hurley was second and Max Richter fourth. Covenant easily won the 4x200 relay, finishing over a full second ahead of Fort Worth Calvary.

Rockwall Heritage Christian's Tyler Treadway won the 300-meter hurdles and finished second in the 110-hurdles. Lutheran's Isaiah Sampson won the 100-meter dash and finished second in the 200.

The Dallas Covenant girls won the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Trinity Christian Willow Park edged Covenant in the 4x200 and finished second in the 4x100.

Class 2A

Erik Rogers led First Baptist to wins in three events. Rogers won the 100 and 200 and ran third in the 4x100 victory. Brannon Farrow of Cambridge won the 110-meter hurdles and finished second in the 300. Farrow edged Andres de Leon of Ovilla Christian at the finish line. Ovilla Christian's boys finished second in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

Madi Botello of First Baptist captured the title in the 300-meter hurdles. Destani Warner of Ovilla Christian finished second in the 100 and 200 and anchored the 4x200 relay to a third-place finish. Kate Radovich of Plano Coram Deo won the 400-meter dash and placed third in the 200.

Class A

DeSoto Canterbury's girls team won the 4x100 and 4x200 relays and finished with 96 points. Granbury North Central Texas finished second in both relays and second in overall points with 78. Triniti Lemmons and Rainelle Nevers led Canterbury. Tyler Street's Sadiyyah Smith won the 100.

SACHSE -- A loss away from first-round playoff elimination, defending Class 6A state champion Jesuit rediscovered its offense just in time to defeat Sachse 10-6 in Game 3 of the Region II bi-district best-of-3 series.

First baseman Will Guzman led a 10-hit Jesuit attack with three RBIs, including a home run. That was one of six extra-base hits for the Rangers.

Left-hander Tyler Murrah (7-0) made the support stand up with a complete-game pitching performance. He walked two, struck out three and threw 107 pitches.

Jesuit (23-12) scored only three runs in splitting the first two games of the series but struck for five in the first inning Saturday.

With injured star Jacob Palisch, a Stanford signee, not able to pitch this season, Jesuit entered the playoffs as the third seed from District 9-6A.

"Comparison to last year's team is a little unfair," said Jesuit coach Brian Jones. "This group is finding its own identity. I loved the way we battled today."

Sachse (19-13), runner-up in District 10-6A, could not completely recover from allowing five unearned runs in the first inning, but the Mustangs managed to close the deficit to two in the second inning.

"We couldn't hold them off," said Sachse coach Chris Burrow. "Jesuit hit the ball better today and did it in clutch situations."

Of the nine hits allowed by Murrah, only two were for extra bases. In the middle innings, he retired nine straight.

"I was trying to treat it like just another game," said the junior, who likes to model his smooth delivery after Rangers pitcher Cole Hamels.

Sachse appeared more nervous at the start, committing errors on the game's first two batters. Jaden Woodson's double made it 2-0. Bijan Kamalipour (double), Jake Ryan (triple) and Guzman (single) followed with run-scoring hits. Ryan, the designated hitter, finished with three hits.

Trent Dean and David Renning connected on RBI singles to cut the Jesuit lead to 5-3. Dean and catcher Jake Green had two hits and two RBI apiece. Renning, a UT-Arlington signee, also had two hits.

Of the seven runs charged to Sachse starter Chris Lacher, only two were earned.

"Our young guys saw what the playoffs are like," said Burrow, whose starting lineup includes six underclassmen. "We just need to keep working hard to get better."

Jesuit advanced to face Rockwall-Heath in the area round.

Randy Jennings

LEWISVILLE -- Plano East continued its impressive run through the playoffs Saturday, completing a sweep of its Class 6A Region I area-round series with a 7-0 victory over South Grand Prairie at Lewisville's Killough Field.

Plano East (23-10) outscored South Grand Prairie 18-1 in the series and has won its four playoff games by a combined score of 33-7. Plano East closed out the series thanks to solid pitching from Gabbi Lopez and an opportunistic offense that finished with 13 hits.

"We worked hard, played relaxed and put up a very solid game," said Plano East coach Cindy Mosteller. "We played to our strengths and made the most of our opportunities against South Grand Prairie."

Plano East grabbed a 1-0 lead in the opening inning on Ronni Ramos' drove sacrifice fly. The lead moved to 2-0 in the third inning on an RBI single by Lopez, then Plano East took control with back-to-back two-run frames for a 6-0 advantage after five innings.

Amy Jensen and Ramos (two RBIs) each drove in runs in the fourth. Bella Konieczka added an RBI double in the fifth.

The run support was more than enough for Lopez, as she scattered five hits for a shutout.

"Gabbi pitched a great game and worked really hard in the late innings to keep the shutout," Mosteller said.

Plano East capped the scoring in the sixth, as Mo Dickerson's RBI single drove in Ramos.

Plano East advanced to next week's Class 6A Region I quarterfinals and will face Waco Midway. Midway beat Plano twice Saturday -- 3-1 and then 7-6 in 10 innings -- to win that series in three games.

Robert Thomas

Forney 4-3, Little Elm 5-2: Freshman Savanna DesRochers pitched a five-hitter, and the Kansas pledge struck out nine as Forney hung on to beat Little Elm in Game 3.

Forney (31-3), ranked No. 1 in the state in 5A, advanced to play Prosper in the 5A Region II quarterfinals. Forney scored a run in each of the first three innings to build a 3-0 lead before Little Elm scored twice in the top of the sixth.

Little Elm rallied from a 4-0 deficit and won it with two runs in the top of the seventh to beat Forney 5-4 in Game 2 earlier Saturday. After the first two hitters in the seventh struck out, Little Elm was one out from being swept.

But Amanda Fields drew her fourth walk of the game and Alyssa Adams hit an RBI double to tie it 4-4. Erin Margraf followed with a game-winning RBI single.

Tatum Stover hit a three-run home run to cap a four-run bottom of the third as Forney jumped out to a 4-0 lead.

Birdville 9-11, Denton Ryan 1-7: Elena Garcia hit a three-run home run in the fourth, and Calie Burris followed with a solo homer as defending 5A state champion Birdville built a 9-0 lead en route to an 11-7 victory in Game 3.

Gianna Valforte was 4 for 5 with two runs for Birdville (26-5-1), and Garcia and Burris combined for four hits, five runs and five RBIs. Denton Ryan (22-12) trailed 11-2 entering the bottom of the seventh but scored five runs in the final inning.

Oregon pledge Grace Green pitched a one-hitter and struck out seven as defending 5A state champion Birdville won 9-1 in Game 2 to tie the series. Valforte and Burris both went 3 for 5 and scored three runs, and Garcia drove in three for Birdville.

Keller 13, Wolfforth Frenship 2: Iowa State pledge Kasey Simpson hit two home runs to power reigning 6A state champion Keller to a two-game sweep.

Texas Tech pledge Amanda Desario had three RBIs, and Simpson finished 2 for 3 with three runs and six RBIs as Keller (27-4-1) extended its winning streak to 12 games. Keller advanced to play Arlington Martin in the 6A Region I quarterfinals.

Keller Timber Creek 11-5, Midland 5-1: A two-run double by Sarah Hawkins highlighted a three-run fourth inning as Timber Creek (30-6-1) beat Midland 5-1 in Game 3 to advance to the 6A Region I quarterfinals.

Madie Green drove in three runs as Timber Creek won 11-5 in Game 2 earlier Saturday. Oklahoma State pledge Mady Lohman and Makaylah Ramirez both scored two and drove in two for Timber Creek.

Prosper 3, North Forney 1: Rachel Eckrote threw a 2-hitter as Prosper -- the No. 3 seed from District 14-5A -- swept its series and advanced to the 5A Region II quarterfinals.

Nora Burns was 2 for 3 with two RBIs for Prosper. Avery Colclaser and Texas A&M signee Abby Smith combined to draw five walks.

Conroe Oak Ridge 9-12, Coppell 8-1: A 12-hit attack led Oak Ridge to the Game 3 win and series victory in 6A Region II.

In Game 2 earlier in the day, Coppell scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie it 8-8, but Oak Ridge scored the winning run in the top of the seventh to win 9-8. Alex Denton was 2 for 3 with four RBIs for Coppell, which had its 17-game winning streak snapped.

Baseball thoughts: Punish the right people when it comes to brawls; best area-round matchups

$

0

On Saturday, umpires ended Molina and Samuell's three-game series in the third inning of Game 2 after a benches clearing brawl. Molina went on to advance due to its 10-0 win in Game 1.

According to Molina assistant coach John Riherd, the UIL could force Molina to forfeit the first-round of its three-game area-round series against Waxahachie on Monday.

To simply hand Waxahachie a win would be ridiculous.

Anybody involved in started or perpetuating the brawl should face consequences. With area round games not starting until Thursday, the UIL has some time to figure out exactly who those people are. Talk to the umpires. Talk to the coaches. Talk to the players. Review video footage if it's available. Find out those actually involved and punish them.

I haven't seen any tape, but I've seen enough bench-clearing brawls to know how it works. There is a small subsection actually engaging in the donnybrook. The rest are either standing around or trying to calm the chaos.

Suspend the former group. Let the latter play.

Now, if the troubled group is too big and Molina wouldn't have enough players to field a team, then fine. Call it a forfeit. But let's not rob a precious game from Waxahachie's and Molina's seniors because it's the easiest way to hand out the punishment.

Best third-round matchups

Rowlett vs. Rockwall

Both teams finished in the top 10 of SportsDayHS' final area rankings, and both dominated their first-round games. Rowlett swept Richardson by a combined score of 20-8. Rockwall beat The Woodlands College Park, 11-1, to take the one-game series to set up a matchup between two neighbors. The two schools are less than 10 miles apart and played earlier in the year. Rockwall took that game, 3-1.

Rockwall-Heath vs. Jesuit

Heath finished the season ranked No. 1 in the area. After losing Game 1 of its three-game series against Lufkin, Heath rebounded with 10-1 and 22-8 wins to advance and face the defending 6A state champions. Jesuit has stumbled at times this year, finishing third in District 9-6A, but found its offense just in time to beat a good Sachse team 10-6 in Game 3 and win the series.

South Grand Prairie vs. Flower Mound Marcus

The top seed in district 7-6A, South Grand Prairie easily took care of Belton to run its win streak to 21 straight games. Flower Mound Marcus rallied from down 5-0 in Game 3 to beat Denton Guyer, 6-5, on a walkoff hit. Marcus now becomes the best team South Grand Prairie will face since it started its winning streak at the beginning of March.

Molina to forfeit Game 1 of next series after all players were ejected for fight against Samuell

Dallas ISD athletic director Gil Garza said Monday that Molina's baseball team will forfeit Game 1 of its upcoming second-round playoff series against Waxahachie because every player was ejected by umpires for their involvement in a fight with Samuell on Saturday.

Molina coach Henry Smith declined to comment.

Dallas ISD has a policy where an athlete can't compete in the next game if they are ejected from a contest. By rule, all players from both Molina and Samuell were ejected for either leaving their bench or leaving their position on the field, whether they took part in the fight or not and even if they were just trying to pull players apart.

"Everyone knows that's our procedure," Garza said. "We try to teach kids there are consequences for their actions. This is not something I'm proud of, but we're about teaching kids right from wrong. This type of behavior will not be tolerated. You have to learn self control.

"These kids are not bad kids. They let their emotions get the best of them. I'm sure a lot of them regret what they did."

Molina's series with Waxahachie will now begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Mountain View College, with Molina down a game.

"I think it's commendable that they're holding the kids accountable," Waxahachie coach Tracy Wood said. "We've just got to get ready to play a baseball game."

Garza said there was no video of the altercation, but the DISD reviewed the reports by the umpires to the UIL and talked to Molina's coach before making a decision.

Game 2 between Molina and Samuell in their first-round best-of-3 series was cut short because of what umpires ruled to be a benches-clearing brawl.

The game was suspended by umpires after the third out in the bottom of the third inning, with Molina leading 7-2. It was ruled that the game would not be completed and would not count.

Therefore, under UIL rules, the best-of-3 series became a one-game playoff and Molina advanced because of its 10-0 victory in Game 1.

Saturday's incident started because of a play at the plate in which a Samuell base runner didn't slide and collided with the Molina catcher. Those two players had an altercation, and Samuell coach David Hinojosa said things escalated quickly from there.

Those two players had an altercation, and Samuell coach David Hinojosa said things escalated quickly from there.

"It happened all in an instance," Hinojosa said. "The moment things started escalating, I sprinted from my third-base box, and by the time I got down to our dirt area, I turned around and both teams were on top of us. Neither team reacted in the way we would hope they would."

Garza said he was told by umpires that punches were thrown and "it was a brawl for a while." Garza said that coaches from both teams "did everything they could to break this up" and that umpires tried to isolate the incident and tried to separate the Samuell runner and Molina catcher.

But other players joined the melee. Samuell players ran onto the field and Molina players came in from the infield and outfield.

"No one from either team was in the dugout," Garza said.

The UIL state track and field meet will be May 11-13 at the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium. Here are six state-meet records -- three boys and three girls -- that athletes from the Dallas-Fort Worth area could challenge.

Boys 3,200 meters

Record: 8:50.43 by Southlake Carroll's Reed Brown last year

Challenger: Brown. Now a senior, Brown says his goal is to break his own state-meet record. The Oregon signee has the top qualifying time at 8:51.96. Brown could also challenge the 1,600 state-meet record of 4:03.27 by Steve Magness of Klein Oak in 2003. Brown ran 4:04.82 at state last year.

Boys 100 meters

Record: 10.15 by Greenville's Henry Neal in 1990

Challenger: Rowlett's Joseph Sheffield. The Oklahoma signee ran a wind-aided 10.07 at regionals, the best high school time in the nation this year , according to DyeStat.com. Sheffield ran 10.20 at the district meet. A lot will depend on if he is fully recovered after tweaking his hamstring at regionals.

Boys long jump

Record: 26-1.50 by Rowlett's Marquise Goodwin in 2008

Challenger: Waxahachie's Jalen Reagor. The TCU football signee has jumped 26-0, the best mark in the nation this year. Breaking a long jump record held by Goodwin would be quite an accomplishment considering that Goodwin competed in the 2012 Olympics in the long jump.

Girls high jump

Record: 6-2 by Amy Acuff of Corpus Christi Calallen in 1992

Challenger: Falyn Reaugh of Highland Park. The Oklahoma signee has cleared 6-0, the second-best mark in the nation. Acuff was a five-time Olympian, with her best finish being fourth at the 2004 Games.

Girls 200 meters

Record: 22.84 by Tiffany Townsend of Killeen in 2007

Challenger: Sha'Carri Richardson of Carter. Richardson has the nation's second-best time in 2017, having run 23.18. Richardson and Kaylor Harris of Mesquite Horn could also make a run at the 100-meter state-meet record of 11.16 by Fort Worth Dunbar's Victoria Jordan in 2008. Harris has run 11.35, and Richardson has run 11.36.

Girls 4x400-meter relay

Record: 3:38.52 by Fort Bend Marshall in 2005

Challenger: DeSoto. DeSoto has run 3:38.99 this year, a time that ranks No. 2 in the nation.

DeSoto retains Todd Peterman, but questions linger: My name 'has been dragged through the mud'

DESOTO -- After two weeks of hanging in limbo, Todd Peterman was officially renewed Monday night as DeSoto's head football coach. But for Peterman, who led DeSoto to its first state football title in December, the wait continues.

"I have been a moral and ethical coach here on and off the field for 10 years," Peterman said after his renewal was announced. "It's a shame that none of that got said tonight."

Very little was said about Peterman by the DeSoto ISD trustees during Monday's regularly scheduled meeting. Peterman wasn't there, but the DeSoto ISD board room was standing room only by the time the meeting began at 6:30 p.m. The doors were closed to more spectators shortly after a stream of football players entered the room.

Like two weeks ago, several community members spoke in support of Peterman. But unlike that evening, when trustees met in closed executive session for three hours to discuss administrative contracts such as Peterman's, there was no private talk about the coach.

Peterman had requested that all matters regarding his job status be addressed in public, board President Carl Sherman Jr. said.

"Of course I would," Peterman said. "I have nothing to hide and my name has been dragged through the mud."

The trustees voted to approve all administrative contracts without any discussion specific to Peterman. After the contracts were given blanket approval, trustee Jerry Hall, who lost his school board re-election bid Saturday, issued an apology regarding the situation.

"I believe in our football players, I believe in this coaching staff and I wish this controversy had never come up," Hall said.

Sherman was repeatedly asked for details about Peterman's contract after the meeting but said the board cannot discuss personnel matters.

"Todd Peterman will be in place next year," Sherman said, "and we're very excited about it."

DeSoto ISD Superintendent David Harris said on April 28 that delaying contract action during the meeting two weeks ago had "allowed DeSoto ISD administration the opportunity to address questions and concerns." The specifics of those concerns, however, are still unknown because trustees have never mentioned any publicly.

Four community members spoke Monday in support of Peterman, including Joe Tave, who teaches classes in U.S. history and African-American studies at DeSoto. Tave, who traveled to DeSoto football games with the players and coaches last season, said Peterman is interested in helping the players on the field and in the classroom.

"I love Coach Peterman. He is a good man," Tave said outside of the meeting. "This man steps up to help."

One community member, Charlotte Chapman Byrd, was critical of Peterman. She declined to give her son's name but said he played during the 2015 season, Peterman's first as head coach. Byrd said Peterman played favorites with some players "and takes care of those he chooses to take care of."

But the crowd was largely in support of Peterman, who was a DeSoto assistant for seven years before being elevated to head coach. Peterman has a two-year record of 22-6, including last year's 16-0 finish that culminated in the Class 6A Division II championship.

Legacy Event Partners chief strategy officer Dave Stephenson, who is well known for putting together high school football events, told the DeSoto trustees that he has traveled across the country and has met few people of Peterman's caliber.

"The way this town had rallied around the coach," Stephenson said, "I hope you remember that."

Record alert! Southlake Carroll senior trying to become the first sub 4-minute mile high school runner in Texas history

$

SOUTHLAKE -- Southlake Carroll's Reed Brown got tips on how to become one of the fastest teenage milers in American history from his chaperone.

That just happened to be Alan Webb, the fastest miler in U.S. history.

Brown had the 2004 Olympian supervising him at the Nike Elite Camp last July in Eugene, Ore. Webb is retired from professional track and now runs a mobile truck repair service (Elite OnSite) instead of world-class times, but in 2001 he became the first American high schooler in almost 34 years to run a sub-4:00 mile.

"We got to talk to him the whole time and learn a little bit from him about what he did in his career, how he broke 4:00," Brown said. "We tried to learn as much from him as we could. He kind of sparked the fad of going for that 4-minute mile."

It was after Brown won the Nike Elite Camp's exhibition mile -- held in conjunction with the U.S. Olympic Trials -- that the Oregon signee realized that he might have what it takes to become a sub-4:00 miler.

Brown, the brother of former NFL kicker Kris Brown, showed that he can kick, too, sprinting from fourth to first in the final 200 meters and running 4:04.73. At the time, that was three seconds off the fastest mile ever run by a high schooler from Texas.

"After that, it kind of dawned on me that if I do work harder, if I get my workouts better, that sub-4:00 could be possible," Brown said.

Dreaming big

Brown is one of the most accomplished distance runners in Texas history, setting the state-meet record in the 3,200 meters (8:50.43) as a junior and winning the Foot Locker Cross Country National Championships and running a 4:03.23 mile as a senior. But entering this week's UIL state meet in Austin, Brown is still chasing an elusive goal that only a handful of runners his age have reached.

Nine high school boys in the United States have ever run a sub-4:00 mile, which is why it's such an alluring challenge Brown said. The list includes three Olympians: Jim Ryun, Marty Liquori and Webb.

"It seemed like this pedestal-type goal, but after going through it, it really became a stepping stone," said Webb, who set the American mile record of 3:46.91 as a professional in 2007.

"The world record is 3 minutes and 43 seconds. To compete at the world stage, you need to be much faster than running a sub-4:00 mile. It's becoming something that very, very good high school runners can do."

At the Nike Elite Camp, Brown beat rival Sam Worley of New Braunfels Canyon and a fellow Oregon signee, Cooper Teare from California. This year, Teare has run 4:00.16 and Worley has run 4:00.61, nearly giving America its first sub-4:00 high school miler since Michael Slagowski in 2016.

Brown went from running 40 miles a week as a freshman -- the only year in high school he also played baseball -- to 70 miles a week this summer. That, and grueling interval workouts on the track (11 400s or 10 600s), have prepared Brown for the agony that each attempt at sub-4:00 brings.

"Definitely a lot of pain," Brown said. "When you're going that fast, your legs are tired, your breathing is hard, your arms are tired, you're probably not getting as much oxygen as you need."

Roger Bannister of Great Britain ran the first sub-4:00 mile in history in 1954. Once others saw that it wasn't impossible, Bannister's world record lasted only six weeks. In 1957, Don Bowden became the first American to go under 4:00.

"For a long time, people thought sub-4:00 was something to be feared," Bowden said in a 2014 Runner's World article. "No one knew what was on the other side. When Bannister didn't collapse and die at the finish line, he showed it could be done."

Ryun was the first to show that it could be done by a high schooler, running 3:59.0 in 1964 and 3:55.3 in 1965. But after Liquori ran 3:59.8 in 1967, no American high school miler broke 4:00 again until Webb ran 3:59.86 on Jan. 20, 2001.

Webb became a household name -- and the subject of a book (Sub 4:00: Alan Webb and the Quest for the Fastest Mile) -- after he broke Ryun's U.S. high school mile record by running 3:53.43 on May 27, 2001 at the Prefontaine Classic. That race was run at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field, the track Brown will call home in college and the track he ran 4:04 at in the Nike Elite Camp.

"Seeing him do that, I feel like gave everyone a little more hope with [going sub-4:00] because he broke it by so much," Brown said. "It almost made it seem like it wasn't that hard, even though it is."

In that race at the Prefontaine Classic, Webb ran as a high schooler against mile world record holder Hicham El Guerrouj and Olympians Kevin Sullivan and Bernard Lagat.

"I benefited greatly from being a part of the Internet's ability to make track and field accessible and to create a celebrity level of popularity among elite track athletes that could mimic some of the more mainstream sports," Webb said. "It gave kids goals. It motivated people. I think we're starting to see the fruits of that. A lot of kids are out there trying."

Webb was the fourth U.S. high schooler in history to run sub-4:00. Five have done it since, including four in a 12-month span between May 2015 and April 2016.

Brown's future college teammate Matthew Maton, an Oregon sophomore, ran 3:59.38 as a high school senior in 2015. Grant Fisher from Grand Blanc, Mich., ran the exact same time less than a month later.

"Seeing Matthew go sub-4:00 definitely changed my mind-set how I viewed the mile, looking at sub-4:00 as a goal rather than a barrier," said Fisher, now an All-American at Stanford. "I think recently a lot of high schoolers are viewing it the same way, just seeing their peers go under 4:00. It seems less of a daunting thing."

Fisher says the Internet has "definitely pushed the needle to where all these high schoolers are running really fast." A wealth of training information is a click away. and athletes can interact through social media while having instant access to the top times being run around the nation. Brown has watched videos of the more recent races in which high school milers broke 4:00.

Chasing Texas history

Brown barely broke 5:00 in the first 1,600-meter race that he ran as a high school freshman.

"I think my first one was 4:52," Brown said.

By the end of that season, he was running 4:32.

"At that time, he was playing baseball and running track," Carroll track and cross country coach JustinLeonard said. "For a kid to run that fast and kind of be splitting time, it was pretty evident that he was something special."

Three years later, the 18-year-old Brown is trying to become the first high school miler from Texas -- and the 10th in U.S. history -- to break 4:00. Leo Manzano was the 2012 Olympic silver medalist in the 1,500 meters and ran a 3:50.64 mile in 2010, but he wasn't running as fast in high school as Brown is.

"I was a 4:06 miler in high school," said Manzano, a nine-time state champion at Marble Falls. "We had four guys that were right there. I was No. 4. It was incredible to have that many guys from Texas being so close to the 4:00 mile. It's great to see how that's happening again.

"I really do think [Brown] has a great shot to go under [4:00]. He's very close."

Manzano finished one second ahead of Brown when they ran in the Texas Relays on April 1. That was in the Jerry Thompson Invitational Mile, which included pro and college runners, and Brown placed fourth in 4:03.23.

Worley, a Texas signee, won that race in 4:00.61. That was the fastest mile ever run by a high schooler from Texas, breaking the record of 4:01.02 by Steve Magness of Klein Oak in 2003.

"Everyone was a little disappointed, a little happy with the race," Brown said. "The goal is always sub-4:00, but still ran good. Tried and didn't get it, so just try at another meet."

It won't happen when Brown and Worley face off Saturday in the Class 6A 1,600 at the state meet -- even though they may have to run the equivalent of a sub-4:00 mile to win.

The 1,600, the standard distance in Texas and nearly every other state for high school-only meets, is 9 meters short of a mile. A 1,600 time of 3:58.59 is equivalent to a 3:59.99 mile, but Jack Shepard of Track & Field News said that no time for a 1,600 race is considered an official mile time.

Brown will have opportunities after state to break 4:00 in a mile before starting college. He was invited to the adidas Boys Dream Mile and Brooks PR Invitational.

Webb hopes to see new members join the sub-4:00 club and had a message for Brown and Worley.

"Tell them that Alan Webb says hello, and I say, 'Get out there and make it hurt and get it done,'" he said.

Sub-4:00 fraternity

The nine high school runners in U.S. history who have broken 4 minutes in the mile, in the order they did it:

1. Jim Ryun, Wichita, Kan.: He ran 3:59.0 as a junior in 1964, then in 1965 he set the American high school mile record of 3:55.3 that stood until 2001. He was a three-time Olympian and earned the Olympic silver medal in the 1,500 meters in 1968. Ryun is the last American to hold the world record in the mile (3:51.1 in 1967).

2. Tim Danielson, Chula Vista, Calif.: Ran 3:59.4 in 1966 and went on to compete for BYU. In 2014 he was convicted of the 2011 murder of his ex-wife.

3. Marty Liquori, Newark, N.J.: Ran 3:59.8 in 1967. He attended Villanova, and he competed in the 1,500 meters at the 1968 Olympics at the age of 19. He was ranked No. 1 in the world for 1,500 meters and 5,000 meters at different points in his career.

4. Alan Webb, Reston, Va.: Was the first U.S. high school miler to break 4 minutes indoors, running 3:59.86 on Jan. 20, 2001. On May 27, 2001, Webb ran 3:53.43 at the Prefontaine Classic to break Jim Ryun's U.S. high school mile record. He ran at Michigan before turning pro in 2002. He won the U.S. Olympic Trials and competed at the Olympics in the 1,500 meters in 2004. He set the American record in the mile by running 3:46.91 in 2007.

5. Lukas Verzbicas, Orland Park, Ill.: Ran 3:59.71 in 2011. He ran briefly at Oregon, tried professional triathlon racing and then suffered a serious bicycle accident in 2012.

6. Matthew Maton, Bend, Ore.: Ran 3:59.38 in 2015. He is a sophomore at Oregon and is a two-time All-American.

7. Grant Fisher, Grand Blanc, Mich.: He ran 3:59.38 in 2015 less than a month after Matthew Maton ran the exact same time. He is a sophomore at Stanford and is a three-time All-American.

8. Drew Hunter, Purcellville, Va.: He ran 3:58.25 in 2016 to break Alan Webb's U.S. indoor high school mile record. Hunter lowered that record to 3:57.81 later in 2016. He had committed to Oregon but in 2016 he decided to forgo college and signed a professional contract with adidas.

Chasing records

Sam Worley of New Braunfels Canyon won last year's Class 6A state title in the 1,600 meters in 4:04.59, and Southlake Carroll's Reed Brown took second in 4:04.82. Here are the records those two will be chasing at this year's state meet when they run in the 1,600 at 8:45 p.m. Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.

The UIL state-meet record is 4:03.27 by Steve Magness of Klein Oak in 2003.

Alan Webb ran 3:59.51 for the first 1,600 meters of a mile race in 2001 to set the national 1,600 record that is recognized by the National Federation of State High School Associations, but that just includes high school-only races.

Brown will also be running the 3,200 at state at 10:20 a.m. Friday. He said his goal is to break the state-meet record of 8:50.43 that he set last year, and he also hopes to challenge the school record of 8:44.01 that was set by Colby Lowe in 2008.

Getting to know Reed Brown away from the track

Family: He is the youngest of six children. His brother Kris, 40, was a kicker in the NFL from 1999 to 2010 and earned All-Pro recognition in 2007. His brother Drew, 21, will be a senior kicker at Nebraska and earned all-conference honors in 2015 and 2016.

"We didn't really talk to Reed about kicking," Kris said. "Our family has never really worked that way, even with Drew. He just kind of navigated to it, it wasn't anything that I tried to get him to do.

"We just focused on playing as many sports as we possibly could, just so you don't get burned out, which is kind of taboo today with everybody specializing. We let each other find our niche."

Playing sports: Reed played wide receiver and defensive back in middle school before deciding that football wasn't his niche. "I didn't feel like I was big enough. I was 5-1 or 5-2. I don't even know if I weighed 100 pounds," he said.

He did get to kick for part of one season when his team's kicker got hurt. Reed played baseball as a freshman and was a center fielder, shortstop, pitcher and catcher. Reed also played soccer until he got to high school.

Special skill: "I think it was about three years ago, when Kris came home, they went up and Reed kicked with him," his father, Hobert, said. "He kicked a 35-yard field goal with his left foot and then did it with his right foot. He's kind of ambidextrous. He's right-handed, he bats left-handed, he kicks a soccer ball left-footed, but he throws right-handed."

Did you know? Southlake Carroll runners have no involvement with outside track clubs, and they don't receive any outside coaching.

"It's good, because everybody is on the same plan, everybody is doing the same workout, everybody is running for the same team," coach Justin Leonard said.

Carroll has a sports dietician talk to the runners about proper nutrition. When it comes to his diet, though, there isn't much that Reed has cut out.

"I just try to stay away from soda," he said.

A new sport for Reed? "We try to get out and play some golf when we're together," Kris said. "He's OK. He probably doesn't have the patience for it. I would like to see him do it running the course. I think he would probably fully dominate if it was extreme golf."

As talented quarterbacks move on, area powers are tasked with finding a suitable replacement under center

Editor's note: This story was originally published on April 26, 2017.

This week marked the first days of spring ball for the most teams. With that comes the first evaluation period for teams trying to find replacements for the stars of years past. For many area powers, those replacements will come at the sport's most important position: quarterback.

For some, the heir apparent is already set. For others, the answers are more vague.

Allen

Mitchell Jonke is gone to Brown after throwing for 2,530 yards, 25 touchdowns and six interceptions last year. In his place will likely be rising junior Grant Tisdale, who played sparingly last season but showed enough signs over the past year to already receive scholarship offers from Mississippi State, SMU and Texas Tech. Allen has a lot of young talent. If Tisdale can adjust to the role quickly, look for Allen to continue making deep runs in the playoffs this year and next.

Cedar Hill

The team with what might be the highest ceiling has the murkiest outlook at quarterback. Notre Dame signee Avery Davis departs, as does backup Garret McGuire, leaving Cedar Hill without a player on its roster who has thrown a varsity pass. New coach Carlos Lynn will spend the spring trying to determine who will lead the offense next season.

Colleyville Heritage

One of the most prolific quarterbacks in the state last year, Cam Roane will graduate this spring and head to San Diego State. He'll leave behind two bonafide FBS receivers in Ke'Von Ahmad and Kameron Brown (who recently committed to UCLA). Those two will surely help whoever will take over. Jagger LaRoe could end up being the guy. LaRoe transferred to Heritage this offseason after leading Bishop Lynch to a TAPPS state title.

DeSoto

SportsDayHS offensive player of the year Shawn Robinson is already at TCU, but the cupboard isn't bare. Courtney Douglas has waited behind a number of FBS players for an opportunity show what he can do. Now he has that chance. Early indications are that he's up to the task. By the time the season is over, expect Douglas to have multiple FBS offers.

Frisco Lone Star

Jason Shelley spent four years as Lone Star's quarterback, leaving about the deepest void as anyone. But Lone Star has M.J. Rivers, a transfer from Prestonwood, who has a similar skill set to Shelley. If Rivers can make the adjustment quickly this spring, Lone Star should be one of the area's top 5A teams yet again.

Thoughts on softball regional quarterfinals: Best matchup, district rematches, districts with 3 teams left

$

Here's what to watch in this week's softball regional quarterfinals, which begin Wednesday.

Best matchup

Two teams that have been almost unbeatable the last two months meet in a one-game playoff in the Class 5A Region II quarterfinals. The Colony will play Frisco Wakeland at 7 p.m. Friday at The Ballfields at Craig Ranch in McKinney.

The Colony (26-6) has won 17 in a row, and Wakeland (27-5) has won 22 of its last 24 games.

Wakeland pitcher Kendall Fritz, who is committed to Nevada, will have to find a way to slow down The Colony's Jayda Coleman and Madison Hirsch.

Coleman, a freshman committed to Oklahoma, is hitting .688 and has 66 hits and 61 runs in 32 games. Hirsch has homered in all three playoff games and leads the Dallas area with 17 home runs while hitting .575 with 68 RBIs and 49 runs scored.

District rematches

In Class 6A Region I, District 6-6A rivals Plano West and Wylie meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Frisco Centennial. Plano West swept their two district games, winning 2-1 and 7-2.

Plano West senior pitcher Sierra Lange is 18-4 with a 0.77 ERA and 219 strikeouts in 146 innings. In three playoff games, she has allowed two runs in 19 innings while striking out 32.

In 5A Region II, District 10-5A rivals Mansfield Lake Ridge and Midlothian meet in a best-of-3 series that begins Wednesday. Midlothian won both of their district matchups -- 14-7 and 12-7. Midlothian's Georgia Capell was 5 for 9 with two home runs, five runs and seven RBIs in those two games.

In 5A Region I, District 6-5A champion Northwest Eaton faces 6-5A No. 4 seed Aledo. They split their two district games, with Eaton winning 8-5 and Aledo winning 7-5.

Districts with three teams left

Three local districts still have three of their four playoff teams alive.

Joining Plano West and Wylie from District 6-6A in the 6A Region I quarterfinals is Plano East. Plano East will play Waco Midway in a best-of-3 series that starts Thursday.

In 5A Region I, District 6-5A has three teams left, with Northwest Eaton, Aledo and district runner-up Saginaw. Saginaw will play defending 5A state champion Birdville in a best-of-3 series beginning Thursday.

Mansfield Legacy joins fellow District 10-5A teams Lake Ridge and Midlothian in the 5A Region II quarterfinals. Legacy starts its best-of-3 series with Burleson Centennial on Thursday.

Dangerous lower seeds

Four local teams that were third- or fourth-place teams in their district have reached the third round of the playoffs. Wylie and Aledo are the No. 4 seeds.

District 14-5A No. 3 seed Prosper will play Forney, the state's No. 1-ranked 5A team, in a 5A Region II series that begins Thursday. Prosper has outscored the opposition 33-6 in the playoffs.

Lake Ridge is the No. 3 seed from 10-5A.

Sometimes, a coin flip helps decide a team's fate in the softball playoffs

For the second straight week, the Plano West softball team will play a one-game playoff instead of a best-of-3 series.

That's not what Plano West coach Mike Ledsome wanted, knowing that one unlucky break or bad bounce could abruptly end the season for a team ranked No. 5 in the state in Class 6A.

"I've been wanting to go series every time. I'm getting outflipped," Ledsome said. "I'm OK with either, but it just puts a little more pressure on you playing just that one game. You've got to play a great game."

When coaches can't agree on playing one game or a series, UIL rules require that they flip a coin to determine how many games they will play. After escaping with a 1-0 win over Duncanville last week, Plano West (27-4) now must play a one-game regional quarterfinal Thursday against a team that knows it quite well, facing district rival Wylie for the third time.

Ledsome's team is the top seed from District 6-6A and was No. 2 in SportsDay's final area rankings, but while Wylie (23-10) finished fourth in its district, it was ranked No. 7 in the area. Ledsome would like to see the UIL reward the higher seed by letting them decide whether to play one game or a series.

"I know third round, a lot of No. 1s are meeting each other, but if it's a case where it's a 1 and 4 or 1 and 3, why not give the No. 1 seed a little bit more say-so? They earned it," Ledsome said.

"Winning district right now, what do you get out of it? Really nothing. You're playing the 4 seed, but when these districts match up that have good teams in them ... it doesn't really matter one through four. The team is good that you're playing."

The Colony (26-6) has won 17 in a row and will play a one-game 5A Region II quarterfinal Friday against Frisco Wakeland (27-5), which has won 22 of its past 24 games. It's the second straight week that both teams have played a one-gamer, and both coaches wanted it that way.

"Our team has big plans this year to go to state, so we decided to prepare them for that by doing a one-game," Wakeland coach Ashlee Wilkerson said. "You don't get a series at the state tournament, so they need to be able to handle the pressure of one game against a tough team."

The Colony coach Deana Coleman echoed those thoughts and added, "If we are not the better team and can't play under that kind of pressure, then we are not ready for the state tournament. It's my job to get them ready to play at that level."
