Texas Tech has scored an important win in the Dallas-area.

Rising 2020 Anna athlete Abner Dubar gave the Red Raiders a verbal pledge on Wednesday afternoon.

Dubar announced his decision via Twitter.

Dubar picked Texas Tech over an offer from Illinois State.

Dubar recorded 61 tackles as a junior last season. He is projected to play in the secondary at the next level.

At 6-foot, 176 pounds, Dubar is not ranked at this time.

Dubar is the second commit in Texas Tech's 2020 recruiting class. He joins three-star Las Vegas athlete Donovan Smith.

State baseball polls: No surprise who leads the pack in 4A/5A, but where do Dallas-area teams fall in 6A?

$

0

Colleyville Heritage -- for its unbelievable talent -- and Argyle -- for its perfection -- entered the season as slam-dunk picks for the state tournament.

Both looked like they could be two of the best teams in the country, let alone the state.

So far, the two teams have lived up to the expectations, as showcased in the latest Texas High School Coaches Baseball Association state polls. Colleyville Heritage (13-1) was ranked as the No. 1 5A team, and Argyle (14-1), less than a week after reigning 6A champion Southlake Carroll ended its 50-game unbeaten streak, came in at the top spot in 4A.

Undefeated Lake Travis has the top ranking in 6A. Flower Mound Marcus (11-4) was ranked third while Prosper (15-2) was ranked sixth. Byron Nelson (13-3) received votes, but not enough to enter the top 10.

Mansfield Legacy, at 12-1, was ranked fifth in 5A. Frisco Lone Star (15-2) was ranked 9th.

Sunnyvale (6-1) and Midlothian Heritage (10-3) were ranked as the eighth and ninth best teams, respectively, in 4A.

Prosper baseball coach Rick Carpenter surpasses local legend, keeps climbing in career wins

$

Editor's note: This story has been updated since it was originally published.

One day, Rick Carpenter imagines he'll reflect on all he's accomplished in his 37 years as a high school baseball coach. And when he does, there will be plenty of wins to remember.

This past weekend Carpenter, a longtime coach at Fort Bend Elkins before joining Prosper in 2007, notched his 866th career win. The team's Twitter account celebrated by announcing Carpenter had become the fourth-winningest coach in state history.

Carpenter said the team received that information from someone who keeps an unofficial ranking of the state's all-time wins leaders. And though there's no official state ranking, there are some context clues we can use to showcase Carpenter's standing.

Lubbock Monterey's Bobby Moegle finished his career with 1115 wins. Calallen's Steve Chapman recorded his 1,000th win last year and is still chasing Moegle.

Carpenter's now 867 wins would mean he now has more than legendary Duncanville coach Bob Rombach, who retired in 2007 with 862 wins. Rombach passed away in 2015. The Field at Duncanville is now named after him.

Regardless of where he stands, Carpenter, the father of St. Louis Cardinals infielder Matt Carpenter, has put together one of the state's best coaching careers. He's won four state championships, including back-to-back state titles at Fort Bend Elkins in 2002-03 and one at Prosper in 2015.

He said he's very proud of all his accomplishments, but he likes to live in the moment. He's had thoughts of retiring in the past, but he's pushing that, and reflecting on his career, off for the time being.

"It's been a lot of fun," Carpenter said after pointing out how much talent he's had over the years.

"It's hard to [retire] when you're enjoying something this much."

Prosper is 16-2 on the year after beating McKinney 10-0 in five innings on Tuesday in the first game of district play.

Correction, 12:28 p.m. Thursday: A previous version of this article incorrectly referred to Bobby Moegle's longtime coaching post as Lubbock Memorial. He coached at Lubbock Monterey. There is no Lubbock Memorial.

Below are awards for Coach and Newcomer of the Year. See more awards at the end of this story.

Coach of the Year: Chance Westmoreland, Argyle

Westmoreland has won Class 4A state championships in each of his first two years as Argyle's head coach, and this season's team finished 32-7 despite losing Clemson pledge Sydney Standifer for the entire season because of a torn ACL. In Argyle's last four games this season, it beat the top four teams in the state -- No. 1 Canyon, No. 2 Levelland, No. 4 Lincoln and No. 3 Sour Lake Hardin-Jefferson -- to win the state title.

2019 SportsDayHS girls basketball Player of the Year: Bishop Lynch guard Endyia Rogers

$

Endyia Rogers put on a dazzling show in the TAPPS 6A state championship game, flirting with a triple-double as Bishop Lynch won its 29th state title in girls basketball. The USC signee's final stat line: 40 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists in an 81-62 victory against The Village School from Houston.

"It's one of the best, but it wasn't the best game of my life," the five-star senior guard said. "I guess [the best] would have to be Southlake Carroll."

Against Carroll on Dec. 7, Rogers scored 50 points -- including 37 after halftime -- while making 19 of 35 shots from the field in an 83-74 overtime win over a UIL Class 6A school. She also scored 39 points, including a game-winning 3-pointer, in a 70-67 state-semifinal win against rival Plano Prestonwood Christian and poured in 38 points in a 66-61 victory against 10-time UIL state champion Duncanville.

"The bigger the game, the better she plays," Bishop Lynch coach Andy Zihlman said. "She doesn't back down to anybody.

"I've never seen a high school player that can do what she can do, especially against the schedule we play, with all the top, tough public schools, not only in North Texas, but in the state."

Zihlman said Rogers has always had an innate scoring ability, but he started getting nonstop calls from college recruiters after Rogers had a growth spurt the last year and a half that saw her shoot up to 5-7 and then parlayed that into "an incredible summer" in AAU leading into her senior year. Some felt that Rogers got snubbed when she wasn't one of Texas' three McDonald's All-Americans this season, but Gatorade selected her as the state's Player of the Year after she averaged 25.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 2.7 steals for a 32-8 team.

Rogers, rated the 35th-best player in the nation in the Class of 2019 by ESPN's HoopGurlz, already has set some lofty goals for college.

"I hope to maintain a 4.0 [grade-point average], I hope to get Freshman of the Year in the Pac-12, and I hope to get a national championship some day," Rogers said.

She finished her career with 2,657 points, 601 rebounds, 579 assists and 344 steals. ... She has a weighted 4.0 grade-point average and is a two-time academic all-state selection. ... She volunteers as a basketball coach, working one-on-one to train young players. ... Her brother, Jerome Jr., helped Madison win the UIL Class 3A state title in boys basketball this season, scoring 14 points in a 49-48 win over Brock in the championship game. ... Their father, Jerome Sr., won a state title as a player at Madison in 1997 and also played on Madison's state runner-up team in 2000. Zihlman said Rogers has become a star player because of the many hours her dad has devoted to training her to develop her skills.

Want to win back-to-back baseball titles in 6A/5A? Coaches say even the best UIL teams need more luck than talent

$
0
0

Baseball is a game of failure, and the line that separates a state champion from a runner-up is etched by nuance more than talent.

That's why, for all the prerequisites required to make the state tournament, teams need something out of their control to happen if they want to win it.

"I'm going to flat out tell you: you need luck," said Southlake Carroll head coach Larry Vucan. "You need breaks."

Vucan would know. He's seen both sides of it. His team won the 6A title in 2018, but the 2017 version of Carroll was as good or possibly better, he said. That team lost to eventual state champion Deer Park 3-2 in the semifinals after a sixth inning balk tied the game and sparked the loss.

If that doesn't happen, Carroll might've entered this season as the back-to-back reigning champions. But it didn't, and back-to-backs don't happen often.

In the last 30 years only one team in the UIL's largest-two classifications has won a state title two years in a row: the 2002-03 Fort Bend Elkins teams, coached by current Prosper head coach Rick Carpenter. Since 2000, 17 programs in the top two classifications have made it back to the state tournament in consecutive years.

Carroll and Northwest Eaton, which is now in the same 6A district as Carroll after winning the 5A title last year, will attempt to add to that list this year.

Everything has to fall into place for a state title in the largest two classifications to happen. A team must be talented, it must be healthy, it must be lucky -- winning the coin flip that decides a one-game playoff from a three-game series helps -- and it must believe it can win a state title. Imagine trying to replicate that.

"The easiest thing is to say don't lose guys, but obviously we don't have any control of that," said Jesuit head coach Brian Jones, whose team won the 6A title in 2016. "That's going to happen."

Attempting to repeat under those circumstances is something Carroll is dealing with now. Vucan said the team lost 25 seniors. So far, the Dragons, after a tough tournament schedule, are off to an 8-9 start. Last year's team lost just 6 games all season and none in the playoffs.

Vucan said his team's success is a product of the players. Losing that many players changes things. It's a "concrete easy answer," Vucan said, for why it's so hard to repeat in Texas.

That loss, especially after a state championship season, can affect a team's fire, according to Flower Mound head coach Danny Wallace, whose team won a state title in 2014.

"I think you have to have some great senior leadership to win it anyway, and then they're gone," Wallace said. "And then you have to start over again."

Jones agrees.

"Once the kids get on board the big thing for me as a coach is to get out of the way," Jones said.

The struggle to repeat

Championship year 6A team Year after title 5A team Year after title
2017 Deer Park Second round Port Neches-Groves Second round
2016 Jesuit Second round Grapevine State runner-up
2015 Cypress Ranch Third round Prosper Third round
2014* Flower Mound Third round Aledo State semifinals
2013 The Woodlands Second round Tomball Second round

*2014 was the last year with only five classifications

Recreating that belief, in addition to returning a talented, lucky team, is difficult. That's why only two programs in the top two classifications - the UIL expanded from two to four baseball classifications in 1979 -- have ever done it.

Carpenter still gets chills thinking about the moment he knew his Elkins team would accomplish it. The night before the state title game he had a meeting with his players. He remembers giving a scouting report by listing off the players from Round Rock and where they would be heading the next year. John Danks, a future ten-year pitcher in the major leagues, had already been selected with the ninth-overall pick by this point.

Carpenter expected nervousness, but there was something else in the air. Once he left the meeting he said he turned to his assistants and asked if they felt it, too.

"I've never felt anything like that in 37 years," Carpenter said.

The next day, with starter Michael Susaneck on the mound, Elkins took down Danks and Round Rock 5-4.

At the time, Susaneck, a future pitcher at UTSA, thought winning a state title was "business as usual." They expected to win it. They believed they could do it. Looking back now, 16 years later, he sees it differently.

"It's crazy how rare it was," he said.

And how rare it continues to be.

Little Elm star R.J. Hampton named Gatorade's Texas basketball Player of the Year and finalist for national award

$
0
0

All Little Elm superstar R.J. Hampton has done in his high school basketball career is play so well that the accolades follow.

You can now add another one -- and maybe two -- to the list.

Hampton was chosen as the Texas boys basketball Gatorade Player of the Year on Friday, becoming the first non-senior to win it since Houston St. John's Justise Winslow, a future top-10 pick in the NBA draft won it back-to-back, starting as a junior in 2013.

Hampton is also the third Dallas-area recipient in the last five years, joining Skyline's Marcus Garrett and Madison's Admon Gilder.

Bishop Lynch guard Endyia Rogers was awarded the Texas girls basketball Gatorade Player of the Year last Friday. She'll play for USC next season.

Hampton, the fifth ranked player and the top recruit in Texas in the 2020 class, according to 247Sports' composite rankings, is also one of three finalists for the Gatorade National Player of the Year. He'll be up against Arizona signee Nico Mannion and James Wiseman, the top ranked recruit in the 2019 class, according to 247Sports' composite rankings.

Hampton, like he has since his freshman year at Little Elm, put up ridiculous number this year. He averaged 32 points, 9.7 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 3.9 steals per game. It was the second-year in a row he averaged more than 30 points per game.

Hampton recently narrowed his college choices down to five, including TCU.

It's cliché, but it looks like we've found softball's 'district of doom' in the Dallas-area

$
0
0

It's become cliché to refer to a district with a bunch of good teams as the "district of doom."

Still, clichés are used for a reason, and softball's district 5-6A is backing it up.

Five of the eight teams in the district have at least 14 wins, including Trophy Club Byron Nelson, which was one of two teams in the district last year that didn't make the postseason. Keller Fossil Ridge, with a record of 11-5, is off to a 3-1 start in district, placing it in fourth place.

A district with six returning playoff teams wouldn't be possible without realignment. With realignment, however, you get a packed district.

That was on full display Thursday.

Keller, a program that has reached four-straight regional finals and has won two state titles over the span, stayed undefeated in district play with a 13-1 win over Denton Guyer, the other last remaining undefeated team in the district. Keller scored at least two runs in all five innings.

Only four teams will make the playoffs, and if the rest of district schedule plays out like the start, it should come down to the wire for every spot.

You can view all of the softball district standings here.

Softball player of the week (3/17): Keller's Hailey Jones

Keller's Hailey Jones

What she did: Jones hit a solo walkoff home run to give Keller a 4-3 win over District 5-6A rival Northwest Eaton on Monday. She followed with an RBI single and a walk in Keller's 13-1 win over Denton Guyer.

Who is she? A 5-foot junior catcher.

The stats: Jones hit 3 for 5 during the week and had a home run, 3 RBI and a walk.

She said it: "It was such an amazing feeling," Jones said. "Going up there I just knew my team depended on me and I needed to be the strong leader on the field to make us win."

Coach said it: "To have the confidence to hit a walkoff home run like that against that team was huge for her. We've spent a lot of time working on her skills and her mental daily drills and she has had an amazing mental game going into the week and that's been at the forefront of her work and it's absolutely paid off." -- Head coach Christina Gwyn-Barton

Did you know? Jones is a left-handed catcher and this is her first season playing on Keller's varsity team.

These Dallas-area products could make a difference for some out-of-state schools in the NCAA tournament

$
0
0

March Madness is finally upon us and plenty of Dallas-area high school talent will be in the NCAA tournament.

Here are five local players on out-of-state teams to watch this March:

Marcus Garrett, Kansas

Garrett was the third-ranked prospect from the state of Texas in 2017 and was named Gatorade Texas Boys Basketball Player of the Year. He recorded 12 triple-doubles and 32 double-doubles in 36 games as Skyline (34-2) reached the state tournament for the first time in school history.

After a freshman at Kansas where he backed up Devonte' Graham, Garrett has seen more stable minutes in Year 2. He's averaging 28.2 minutes per game this season, leads the team in steals and is second in assists.

CJ Massinburg, Buffalo

Massinburg leads the Bulls in points per game at 18.3, good for third best in the entire Mid-American Conference. Buffalo posted the best record in all of college basketball this season, going 31-3 and picking up road wins against major-conference foes like West Virginia and Syracuse during the non-conference slate.

Massinburg played for South Oak Cliff, where he led his team to a 31-8 record as a senior, averaging 22.3 points, 4.0 assists and 6.0 rebounds per game.

The Duncanville graduate has made his final season in East Lansing his most successful one. McQuaid has posted career highs in points, rebounds, assists and steals per game. His 30.5 minutes per game is second most for the Spartans, and his 27-point performance on Sunday propelled Michigan State to a Big Ten Tournament title.

McQuaid's biggest impact is felt on the defensive end of the floor, though. He was recently named to the Big Ten's All-Defensive Team.

PJ Washington, Kentucky

Washington, a Frisco native, is Kentucky's most explosive player, leading the Wildcats in both points and assists this season. In late January and February, Washington had a 10-game stretch in SEC play where he scored at least 20 points eight times.

Babb played high school ball for Arlington Martin, where he averaged 16 points, 8.4 rebounds and 8.0 assists during his senior season.

Marques Bolden, Duke

Bolden's availability for the NCAA Tournament is up in the air. He suffered a knee injury trying to block a fast-break dunk in Duke's March 9 matchup against North Carolina. He missed the ACC tournament because of the injury, which Mike Krzyzewski clarified was an MCL injury, not ACL.

Bolden attended DeSoto HS, where he helped lead the Eagles to a 6A state title. This season he has posted season highs for points, rebounds, blocks, steals and minutes for the Blue Devils.
