Why Byron Nelson's fast start should come as no surprise

Trophy Club Byron Nelson is off to a 14-3 start and is ranked 10th in the latest Texas High School Baseball Coach's Association's polls.

Maybe we should've seen this coming.

A year ago, Byron Nelson finished with an overall losing record, but that doesn't tell the team's story. The Bobcats went three rounds in the playoffs, surviving game 3s against Allen and South Grand Prairie before falling to eventual state champion Southlake Carroll.

Byron Nelson found some magic last year, and it seems to have carried over.

The Bobcats, led by four RBIs from Matthew Bailey and two runs from sophomore Hudson White -- the all-area Newcomer of the Year last year -- swept Keller Fossil Ridge last week to open district play. And in a district with two defending state champions -- Northwest Eaton moved up to 6A after winning last year's 5A title -- Byron Nelson looks like it could be an early favorite.

The Bobcats will hit the road and face Keller Central tonight, which is off to a 7-9 start.

State baseball polls: New Frisco team enters 5A rankings; Collevyille Heritage and Argyle stay on top

Frisco Wakeland impressively swept Frisco Reedy to open District 9-5A play last week. It seems the rest of the state took notice.

Wakeland (13-6) was ranked ninth in 5A in the latest Texas High School Baseball Coach's Association's polls a week after the Wolverines weren't ranked. Frisco Lone Star (16-3), after splitting with Centennial last week, dropped out of the rankings.

Colleyville Heritage (15-1) and Argyle (16-1), two of the most talented teams in the country, continue to dominate the state rankings, taking the top spots in 5A and 4A, respectively.

Undefeated Lake Travis (16-0) was ranked first in 6A for the second week in a row. Flower Mound Marcus (13-4) continued to be the top-ranked Dallas-area team in 6A, coming in sixth for the second consecutive week. Prosper also remained in the sixth spot (17-2). Byron Nelson (14-3) entered the fold in 6A.

Mansfield Legacy, after splitting with Burlseon, dropped from fifth to eighth. Midlothian Heritage (12-3), on the other-hand, jumped from ninth to sixth in the 4A rankings.

SPOTLIGHT

State-ranked Legacy has huge first two innings

Two innings and nearly three trips through the batting order. The two markers shouldn't be on the same time frame, but that's what happens when you start off a game like Mansfield Legacy did on Tuesday.

The Broncos (14-2), ranked eighth in the state in Class 5A by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association, scored 12 runs in the first two innings, leading to a 16-0 win over Arlington Seguin in five innings. All nine starters reached base before Seguin could get out of the second.

Catcher Nate Rombach, a Texas Tech signee who's projected to be selected relatively early in the next Major League Baseball draft, had the biggest hit of the night. In front of multiple professional scouts, he sliced a liner into the right-center gap and raced to third for a stand-up triple.

Legacy starting pitcher Nathan Mohr had three strikeouts and didn't give up a hit in three innings pitched.

A Dallas-area high school football coach is the latest person trying to resurrect Johnny Manziel’s career

$

Johnny Manziel officially signing this week with the Memphis Express of the Alliance of American Football marked his return to professional football in the U.S.

And it means a local Texas high school football coach is the next person who will try to revive the career of the former Texas A&M Heisman Trophy winner who’s NFL career as a first-round draft pick failed and who most recently was cut by the Montreal Alouettes and banned from the Canadian Football League.

Mike Singletary doubles as Trinity Christian-Addison and Express head coach, and now Manziel might be his next starting quarterback.

"I didn't know what I expected," Singletary said Tuesday at an Express press conference to introduce Manziel. "It’s amazing so many things that you hear beforehand and you try to keep away from forming opinions of what you think a person might be like, and you actually meet him and he’s very pleasant ... Just want to get back to being Johnny Manziel, whatever that was and whoever that was."

Singletary, a former NFL head coach and Hall of Fame linebacker, joined TC-Addison in late March 2018 with hopes of rejuvenating his coaching career at the grassroots level after spending the prior year out of the business.

Less than two months later, the AAF hired him as Express head coach, and he committed to making both roles work: Memphis’ season, which runs from February to April, doesn’t overlap with TC-Addison’s.

RELATED: Hall of Famer Mike Singletary almost gave up coaching -- then, two phones rang at the same time

While TCA-Addison finished 1-10 in Singletary’s first year, perhaps the coach’s biggest challenge lies with his new quarterback and a struggling offense in Memphis.

Manziel’s path to Memphis has been tumultuous -- as shown in this elaborate career timeline -- and comes a few weeks after the CFL banned him for being “unable to abide by the terms of his agreement."

He finished in Montreal with 1,290 yards, five touchdowns and seven interceptions, including four on Aug. 3 in the first half of his first start since playing for the Cleveland Browns. Prior to the CFL, Manziel, a Kerrville Tivy graduate, endured a three-year football hiatus when his NFL career ended in disarray from substance abuse, legal issues and poor performance.

"I guess I've just changed the way I lived life in the past," Manziel said at the press conference. "I've started focusing on things that I really care about: my family, my football and trying to better my life and have a routine that makes things work and not things break like they did a couple years ago."

Singletary could need to rely on Manziel’s contributions soon.

Zach Mettenberger, the former LSU and NFL quarterback, started the past three games but left last weekend's game with an ankle injury. Singletary benched Christian Hackenberg, the team’s original starting quarterback and a former second-round NFL pick from Penn State, earlier this season.

According to the Memphis Commercial Appeal, Memphis general manager Will Lewis left open the possibility Manziel could play in the last-place Express’ next game: at 7 p.m. Sunday against the Birmingham Iron.

“I’ve talked to some of the coaches that he’s played for, and I know he can play. I know he’s still very talented," Singletary said. "It’s just a matter of all of the other things that are coming at him right now and to be able to get him on the field."

Johnny Manziel's professional football career timeline:

Below are some names of Dallas-area athletes and teams to watch at upcoming track and field events. Read our insider about why many area football athletes participate -- and excel -- in track here.

Girls athletes to watch

Jasmine Moore, Mansfield Lake Ridge

The Georgia signee has already claimed a pair of national titles this year -- winning the long jump and triple jump at the New Balance Nationals Indoor meet. Moore set a state record and recorded the second-best jump in United States history for a high school girl in the indoor triple jump by jumping 44 feet, 2.5 inches at the New Balance meet. Outdoors, she will be trying to win her fourth consecutive Class 5A state championships in the long jump and triple jump and will be trying to break the triple jump high school national record of 44-11.75. She plans to compete in the triple jump for the first time this outdoor season at next week's Texas Relays.

Brynn Brown, Denton Guyer

The sophomore ranks No. 2 in the nation in the 3,200 at 10:29.60. She has also run a nation-leading time of 16:25.47 in the 5,000 meters -- an event that isn't run in UIL postseason meets. Brown was the 6A state runner-up in the 1,600 last year, running 4:54.36.

London Culbreath, McKinney North

The junior is trying to sweep the 5A state titles in cross country and the 1,600 and 3,200 meters for the third straight year. She ranks sixth nationally in the 1,600 with a time of 4:56.32, and she is No. 10 in the 3,200 at 10:41.64.

Nissi Kabongo, Frisco Liberty

The Stephen F. Austin signee finished fifth in the 5A high jump at state last year, clearing 5-4. This year, the senior has already cleared 5-10, which is tied for third-best in the nation.

Simone Watkins, Frisco

The Texas Tech signee is the defending 5A state champion in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles. She ranks No. 2 in the nation in the 300 hurdles with a time of 42.78 and is No. 7 in the 100 hurdles at 14.01. Both times are faster than what she ran at the state meet last year.

Boys athletes to watch

Carter Cheeseman, Fort Worth Christian

After a 10th-place finish at the prestigious Foot Locker Cross Country National Championships in the fall, the Notre Dame signee won the 5,000 at this month's New Balance Nationals Indoor meet with a time of 14:40.01. He ran 4:11.27 in the mile at the same meet. Cheeseman won TAPPS 5A state titles in the 1,600 and 3,200 last year.

Alex Maier, Flower Mound

The Oklahoma State signee won the 6A cross country state title in the fall, and last week he won the 5,000 at the Texas Distance Festival by running 14:26.95 against a field loaded with the top distance runners in the state. Flower Mound teammate Jarrett Kirk owns the nation's fourth-best time in the 3,200, having run 9:07.56.

Will Muirhead, Lovejoy

He ranks No. 1 in Texas and No. 3 in the nation in the 1,600 with a time of 4:15.32. That time would have been good enough to win the 5A state title last year, and it's 11 seconds faster than Muirhead ran in finishing sixth in the 5A race at state.

Ismael Kone, Lake Highlands

The versatile senior ranks in the top 15 in the nation in three events. He is tied for fifth in the long jump (24-5), is sixth in the 200 (21.20) and tied for 14th in the 100 (10.55).

Cameron Miller, Bishop Dunne

The Florida signee is the defending TAPPS 6A state champion in the 200. But it's the 100 in which Miller ranks third in the nation, having run 10.35.

Teams to watch

DeSoto girls

The Class 6A powerhouse has won a team state championship three years in a row and six times in the last eight years -- and now might have one of its best teams ever. Jayla Hollis and Jalaysi'ya Smith rank first and second in the nation in the 100-meter hurdles with times of 13.68 and 13.69, DeSoto has the nation's fastest times in the 4x100 relay (45.37) and 4x200 relay (1:36.56), and it's ranked No. 2 nationally in the 4x400 relay at 3:43.66. The national rankings from DyeStat.com also show that Arkansas signee Rosaline Effiong is fourth in the 400 at 54.65, Ja'Era Griffin is tied for fourth in the 100 (11.66) and Hollis ranks seventh in the 200 (23.95). It should be an entertaining district meet, as the UIL's realignment placed DeSoto in 7-6A along with Mansfield Lake Ridge, last year's 5A girls team state champion.

Flower Mound Marcus girls

After finishing as the 6A team state runner-up a year ago, Marcus returns a pair of nationally ranked field-event athletes. Baylor signee Mackenzie Hayward is the defending state champion in the pole vault, and she is tied for No. 3 in the nation, having cleared 13-0. Senior Taryn Hankins ranks fourth in the long jump with a leap of 20-2.75.

DeSoto boys

After finishing seventh as a team at last year's state meet, DeSoto added 2018 TAPPS 6A 100-meter state champion Jalen Drayden, an Arizona State signee who transferred from Bishop Dunne. Drayden, Demarco Moon, Kennedy Harrison and Bryan Hanspard ran 40.77 in the 4x100 relay, which ranks third nationally. DeSoto has the nation's best time in the 4x400 relay -- 3:12.34 -- and ranks ninth nationally in the 4x200 relay at 1:26.95. Harrison is No. 9 in the nation in the 200 at 21.27 after finishing third at state in that event last year.

'It's going to turn me into a monster': Why many of Dallas-area's elite football players participate – and excel – in track

Plano East senior Tyler Owens turned down the opportunity to start college this spring so he could chase a 100-meter state championship in track.

To claim the title of fastest man in Texas, he will have to be the fastest football player in the state.

Owens, a football All-American who has signed Texas, is ranked No. 2 in the nation in the 100 meters with a time of 10.29 seconds. Joining him in the top 15 are a pair of Illinois football signees -- Plano running back Kyron Cumby at No. 5 with a time of 10.42 and Duncanville All-America wide receiver/defensive back Marquez Beason, who is tied for 14th at 10.55.

"I like that I'm not the only fast football player," said the 6-2, 205-pound Owens, who is rated the ninth-best safety in America in the Class of 2019 by 247Sports.com. "The toughness of football practice really prepared me for the hard track practices."

It's not hard to find Dallas-area football stars in the DyeStat.com national rankings for track. They are everywhere.

Lancaster's Ketron Jackson is No. 3 in the long jump with a leap of 24 feet, 7.5 inches, and he runs on a 4x200 relay team that ranks second in the nation with a time of 1:24.95. He's also a lightning-fast wide receiver who as a sophomore already has an offer from national runner-up Alabama for football.

Denton Guyer's Eli Stowers is considered one of the nation's premier quarterbacks in the Class of 2021. Don't be surprised if you see the 6-4, 205-pound Stowers hurdle a defender or leap over a pile of players to score a touchdown next fall, as he's tied for No. 3 in the nation in the high jump with a mark of 6-10.

Three players from Duncanville's 14-1 Class 6A Division I state runner-up football team -- Beason, running back Ja'Von Fountain and wide receiver Marquelan Crowell -- join freshman football player Pierre Goree on a 4x100 relay team that is No. 6 in the nation with a time of 41.00. Beason won the TAPPS 6A 100-meter state championship as a sophomore at Bishop Dunne before transferring to Duncanville for his senior year, and both he and Fountain, an Eastern New Mexico signee, plan to run track and play football in college.

"The conditioning we got in football, it helped a lot. We ran a lot," Beason said. "Some [track] teams are just now getting in shape. We've already been in tip-top shape."

Football players are required to run track at Plano East. Owens, wide receivers Braylon Henderson and Josh Allison and running back Trevion Jones-Scott helped Plano East to an 8-3 season in the fall and now run on a 4x200 relay team that is No. 10 in the nation with a time of 1:27.02.

"Track speed is completely different than football running," said Plano East boys track coach Jerry Gardner, who is also the wide receivers coach for the football team. "But [football] does play a role in understanding that you have to put the work in to be successful, because workouts are pretty difficult, and they have to fight through them. Just like [football] practices are a grind."

Boys track coach Maurice Bynum runs the offseason workouts for Plano football players, but those don't begin until January. That allows the athletes' bodies to recover from the pounding they took in football, and Cumby can see a difference, having already surpassed the time of 10.55 that he ran in finishing fifth in the 6A 100 meters at state last year.

"I feel stronger, so I think I can get low 10.2s if we get some warm weather," said Cumby, who plans to run track as a freshman at Illinois, in addition to playing football.

Duncanville quarterback Ja'Quinden Jackson and safety Chris Thompson Jr. are among the top junior football players in the nation, and both have committed to play in the Under Armour All-American Game next season. But rather than spend the spring sorting through their many college football offers -- they have about 60 between the two of them -- they are running track and competing in the 100 meters and on relays.

"All the guys that want to get better at football, we tell them that you need to come out to track, so we can teach you how to run," said Leon Paul, who is Duncanville's head track coach and also the wide receivers coach. "If we teach you how to run, you can run way faster with the ball in your hand."

That is scary news for the rest of the state, considering Duncanville's football team outscored its opponents 754-136.

"I kept getting caught from behind, so I had to get faster," said Jackson, who will be impossible to stop next fall if he improves what is already a strength of his game -- he ran for 1,497 yards and 23 touchdowns in 2018.

"It's definitely helping my form," said Thompson, who was named a first-team junior All-American by MaxPreps.com. "It's going to turn me into a monster."

Oh, brother! Arlington Lamar's Jasub Flores breaks both of his older brother's scoring records

$

0

Arlington Lamar junior Jasub Flores decided before this season started that it would be his last as a high school soccer player.

He plans to graduate a semester early next year, enroll at Midwestern State and play with his older brother, Carlos, once again.

Jasub, however, had to accomplish one thing before re-joining his brother.

On Tuesday's senior night, in front of his older brother and family, Jasub broke Lamar's records for most career goals and most goals in a single season - two honors that Carlos, a 2017 graduate, previously held.

The two goals in Lamar's 11-0 win over Fort Worth's Young Men's Leadership Academy brought Jasub's season total to 35 and career total to 61.

To celebrate, Carlos gave his younger brother a signed ball, commemorating the record-breaking moment.

"I've been learning from him throughout all the year," Jasub said of his older brother, "since we were little. He was always the best player on the field."

Jasub would know. He spent his freshman year on the same field as Carlos, watching his older brother set two major school records. Back then, Jasub said, Carlos shouldered the team's scoring load. Once he graduated it was time for Jasub to take over.

He scored enough his sophomore season to make breaking his brother's record a definite - nearly likely -- possibility with two more seasons left. Then he decided he'd be graduating early, making the pursuit of his brother's records a race against time.

Throughout the season Jasub said he doubted himself. Scoring 35 goals wouldn't be easy, so he started overthinking himself.

Eventually he got to Tuesday night, one goal away from breaking both records with his older brother watching. After about 10 minutes one of his teammates was fouled in the box, leading to a penalty kick for Jasub.

"This is yours," Jasub remembers a teammate telling him, reinforcing the significance of the moment.

Once again, he started overthinking himself. The referee took forever to give him the signal, he said, forcing his mind to ask the question: "what if I miss?"

He got rid of any doubt shortly after, chipping the ball past the goalie for two records.

"Now there's no more pressure," he said.

"It was exciting. Couldn't have asked for anything better."

Lamar head coach Saroeurn "Sunny" Soeun started at the school six years ago. Carlos was a freshman at the time. He's seen both of the Flores brothers grow and go through his soccer program. It's been a special time with two special talents, he said.

"I think it's very rare where two brothers who have impacted a program that much and at the same time (have had) soccer lead to higher education," Soeun said.

Jasub isn't finished at Lamar yet. The Vikings have one more regular season game left before they head to the playoffs for the program's seventh-straight year.

But what would've happened if Jasub stayed for a fourth year?

"He might've got 100," Soeun said.

Talent-rich Jesuit-Sheaner Relays will offer early preview of UIL state track meet

$

The UIL state track and field meet isn't until May 10-11, but this weekend's 55th Jesuit-Sheaner Relays will provide a preview of the scintillating matchups that will end up deciding state titles.

There are 105 athletes entered in the Jesuit-Sheaner Relays who competed in last year's UIL state meet, and 12 teams from Oklahoma are scheduled to compete. Twelve athletes who combined to win 19 individual state championships in Texas or Oklahoma are among the entrants for a meet that starts Friday night at Jesuit with the 3,200-meter run and concludes Saturday with all other events.

As an added bonus, on Saturday afternoon there is an exhibition 150-meter race between 1988 Olympian Roy "Robot" Martin and 1992 Olympian McClinton Neal.

The boys 4x100 relay will look like a race at a national championship event. Five teams scheduled to compete in that race are ranked among the top 12 in America, with Tyler John Tyler -- tied for first with a time of 40.66 -- joined by No. 3 DeSoto (40.77), No. 4 Lancaster (40.91), No. 6 Duncanville (41.00), No. 11 Plano East (41.30) and No. 12 Bishop Dunne (41.37).

Arguably the top individual head-to-head race will be the boys 100. Plano East's Tyler Owens -- ranked No. 2 in the nation with a time of 10.29 -- is scheduled to go head-to-head with third-ranked Cameron Miller, a Florida signee from Bishop Dunne who has run 10.35. Eighth-ranked Caleb McMiller from John Tyler, who has run 10.47, is also in that race.

In the girls 100, defending 5A state champion Kenondra Davis of Fort Worth Trimble Tech, ranked No. 2 in the nation with a time of 11.59, will race fourth-ranked Ja'Era Griffin from DeSoto, who has run 11.66. Davis, ranked No. 1 in the nation in the 200 at 23.54, will face DeSoto's Jayla Hollis (No. 6 at 23.95) in that event.

The girls 100 hurdles will feature four athletes ranked in the top 10 in the nation -- DeSoto's Hollis (No. 1 at 13.68), No. 2 Jalaysi'ya Smith (13.69) of DeSoto, defending 5A state champion Simone Watkins (No. 7 at 14.01) of Frisco and No. 10 Justice Coutee-McCullum (14.08) of Hockaday.

Perhaps the top distance race will be the girls 1,600. The start list includes 2018 6A state runner-up Brynn Brown of Denton Guyer, defending 5A state champion London Culbreath of McKinney North and Florida State signee Ava Peeples of Lake Highlands.
