The Dallas Cowboys are going to the Super Bowl...one player at a time.

Below are some former Cowboys, as well as some players who went to local high schools and colleges, who will make an appearance in Super Bowl 50 on Feb. 7.

Former Cowboys

DeMarcus Ware

Ware spent nine seasons with the Cowboys racking up 141 games played, 117 sacks and 442 tackles. Ware is currently with the Denver Broncos.

Wade Phillips

Phillips was the head coach of the Cowboys for four season accumulating a 34-22 record. His best season was his first when he went 13-3. He coached the team from 2007-2010 when he was fired mid-season. Phillips is currently with the Denver Broncos.

The Cowboys signed Williams as an undrafted free agent in 2010. He spent 2010 and 2011 with Dallas, mostly on the practice squad, before they cut him during their 2012 training camp. Williams is on his fifth team since then, but has finally found a role, primarily as a special teamer, for the Panthers. Williams also went to school at Tyler John Tyler and UTSA.

Former high school players

Von Miller - DeSoto

The former Texas A&M Aggie played for DeSoto while in high school. Miller is currently with the Denver Broncos.

Louis Vasquez - Corsicana

Vasquez, who is a guard for the Broncos, also played for Texas Tech. Vasquez is currently with the Denver Broncos.

Aqib Talib - Richardson Berkner

The cornerback played with the New England Patriots for two seasons, and then ended up being a big part of Denver's success against them in this postseason. Talib is currently with the Denver Broncos.

Daryl Williams - Lake Dallas

Williams also went to school at Oklahoma. Williams is currently with the Carolina Panthers.

Former local college players

Gary Kubiak - Texas A&M

The Broncos' head coach played for the Aggies from 1979-1982. He also served as the running backs coach from 1992-1993. Kubiak is currently the head coach of the Denver Broncos.

Emmanuel Sanders - SMU

Sanders' four-year career at SMU featured 285 receptions, 3,791 receiving yards and 34 touchdowns. Sanders is currently a wide receiver for the Denver Broncos.

Corey Nelson - Oklahoma

In the photo on the right, Nelson is No. 52.

According to sports-reference.com, Nelson had 156 tackles and 10 passes defended for the Sooners from 2010-2013. Nelson is currently with the Denver Broncos.

Fozzy Whittaker - Texas

In four years at Texas, Whittaker had 885 career rushing yards on 263 carries. Whittaker is currently with the Carolina Panthers.

Antonio Smith - Oklahoma State

The 12-year veteran joined the Broncos at the right time. After leaving Oklahoma State, Smith has played for the Cardinals, Texans and Raiders before this season. He was the No. 135 pick in the 2004 draft by Arizona. Smith is currently with the Denver Broncos.

Colin Jones - TCU

In Jones' final season with TCU, the defensive back totaled 80 tackles and 11.5 for a loss. He originally entered the league with the San Francisco 49ers and has spent the last four seasons with Carolina. Jones also played high school ball at Bridgeport. Jones is currently with the Carolina Panthers. (H/T Nick Harris and Bullwriter).

Wide receiver Camron Williams, ranked by 247Sports.com as the 64th-best recruit in the state, announced on Twitter that he has committed to TCU.

Williams (6-3, 200) attends Skyline but didn't play for the school this season. He played for First Baptist in 2014, catching 29 passes for 487 yards and five touchdowns.

Kennedale senior running back Quardraiz Wadley, the Class 4A Offensive Player of the Year, announced on Twitter that he committed to UTEP. Wadley rushed for 2,488 yards and an area-best 45 touchdowns.

Sachse defensive back Jared Mayden announced on Twitter that Oklahoma and Alabama are his two finalists and that he will announce his choice at 8:15 a.m. on Feb. 3 -- national signing day -- in the Sachse auditorium. Mayden, No. 5 in SportsDay's Area Top 100 recruiting rankings, decommitted from Oregon earlier this month. He visited Oklahoma this weekend.

Oral commitments are nonbinding. Feb. 3 is the first day that a football player in the Class of 2016 can sign a national letter of intent.

Former Celina star Jake Raulerson graduating early from Texas, transferring to UCLA

$

Former Celina star offensive lineman Jake Raulerson is transferring from Texas to UCLA.

It's not big news, because Raulerson (6-4, 295) had announced a month ago that he was going to transfer after graduating from Texas' McCombs School of Business. But it's a pretty good indication of the academic focus that Raulerson has, because he's only a redshirt sophomore and he's finishing up his undergraduate degree this semester.

Raulerson was a backup center for the Longhorns last year and was expected to contend for a starting spot next year. At Celina, Raulerson was selected to SportsDay's All-Area team as a senior in 2012. For the Class of 2013, he was rated as the state's No. 14 recruit by Rivals.

Raulerson, who was named to the Big 12 Conference All-Academic team in the fall, obviously has an academic focus. But he also has a good sense of humor. On Twitter, he's "Jake from State Farm," mimicking the commercials currently running.

Former high school stars Von Miller (DeSoto) and Aqib Talib (Richardson Berkner) make key plays for Super Bowl-bound Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos are headed to the Super Bowl, and not surprisingly, Peyton Manning gets a lot of the spotlight. But the Broncos wouldn't have beaten the New England Patriots without some huge contributions from former Dallas-area high school stars.

DeSoto alum Von Miller was at the front of a fierce pass rush that had Pats QB Tom Brady under pressure throughout the game. He finished with 2.5 sacks, 5 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 4 quarterback hits, a pass deflection and an interception.

"He's a special player, but being an Aggie, I'm really proud of him," Broncos coach Gary Kubiak said in this Denver Post story. "I've known him since he was a kid. How far he's come, the man he's become, the player he's become, the leader on this football team."

Miller and the Broncos made the Patriots struggle, but New England still had the chance to tie the game after Rob Gronkowski made a tremendous touchdown catch with 12 seconds left. But Brady's pass attempt on the two-point conversion was intercepted -- after it was tipped away from the receiver by former Richardson Berkner star Aqib Talib.

Talib said beating the Patriots, his former team, made the victory sweeter.

"Definitely man," Talib said in this Boston Herald story. "Being able to beat them twice in one year? I'm still in a group chat with a lot of those guys so I'm gonna be on them."

The Carrollton Newman Smith vs. Woodrow Wilson boys and girls basketball games that were scheduled for Tuesday have been moved to Wednesday. A two-alarm fire at Woodrow Wilson caused the school to be evacuated Tuesday morning, and school has been canceled Wednesday.

The varsity girls game will be played at 6 p.m. at Forester Field House, and the varsity boys game will be at 7:30 p.m. at Newman Smith. The Newman Smith boys are 7-0 in District 11-5A and have a one-game lead over Woodrow Wilson.

What could the new Class 6A landscape look like?

$

The University Interscholastic League's biennial realignment process takes place next week.

Here's my guess on how the new landscape might look in Class 6A. Reminder: this is strictly for fun. The UIL does a masterful job of keeping its new alignments under wraps until they are released on Monday morning, so this doesn't come with any behind-the-scenes info. It's just me, spit-balling.

The UIL does have a few rules that come into play here. Schools in the same ISD and the same classification must stay together if there are seven or fewer schools from the same school district. So, for example, Arlington ISD's high schools can't be split into separate districts, regardless of convenience.

Here are some other criteria the UIL keeps in mind, but doesn't necessarily follow:

"Group geographically contiguous schools in groups of no more than ten and place in districts with an even number of schools, except when that action causes an extreme travel hardship. Schools in a district in urban areas may not always be contiguous."

Remember, that's not a concrete rule. The UIL created a nine-team district last time around - the monster 6-6A - by smushing Lewisville ISD, Plano ISD, Allen and McKinney Boyd together. It also had two seven-team DFW-area 6A districts: Districts 7- and 8-6A.

(A few other caveats before starting: I'm predicting Abilene in 2-6A, paired with Midland ISD, Odessa ISD, Amarillo Tascosa and Wolfforth Frenship. That means that San Angelo Central will need a home, and I've moved them in with Waco Midway, Copperas Cove and the Killeen schools)

See the map shown below here:

A glimpse at what Class 6A might look like in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

District 3-6A

Fort Worth Paschal
Fort Worth Young Men's Leadership Academy
Haltom
Keller
Keller Central
Keller Fossil Ridge
Keller Timber Creek
North Crowley
Weatherford

Comment: The area's only nine-team district (for now). New magnet Fort Worth YMLA is required by UIL rule to move into the classification with its school district's largest school (in this case, Paschal). That doesn't mean that this will stay there at the start of the next football season. The league does have an appeal process to move down. The rub is that it requires unanimity from other member schools from the departing AND arriving districts. Given that YMLA is tiny (around 300 boys enrolled), maybe they get a break. Then again, maybe not.

District 4-6A

Arlington
Arlington Bowie
Arlington Lamar
Arlington Martin
Arlington Sam Houston
Euless Trinity
Hurst L.D. Bell
Mansfield

Comment: Woo boy. If this came to pass, with perennial powers Euless Trinity and Arlington Martin paired with 2015 semifinalist Mansfield, this would likely be one of the toughest 6A districts in the state, no question.

District 5-6A

Coppell
Denton Guyer
Hebron
Flower Mound
Flower Mound Marcus
Lewisville
Southlake Carroll
Trophy Club Byron Nelson

Comment: A bear of a district in football (SLC and Guyer, with an improving Marcus and Lewisville), but even more unreasonable in other sports, such as baseball, girls and boys soccer, volleyball, cross country, etc.

Class 6-6A

Cedar Hill
DeSoto
Duncanville
Grand Prairie
Irving
Irving MacArthur
Irving Nimitz
South Grand Prairie

Comment: Irving ISD doesn't like this pairing, but with Dallas ISD sporting only two 6A programs and Carrollton-Farmers Branch having none, Irving High, Nimitz and MacArthur draw the shortest of straws. A fantastic basketball district in boys and girls, too.

Class 7-6A

Jesuit
Lake Highlands
Richardson
Richardson Berkner
Richardson Pearce
Skyline
W.T. White

Comment: The big note here would be Skyline going into Region I (which looks a certainty at this point). Remember, the UIL shies away from odd-numbered districts, but this would be a six-team configuration in girls sports.

Class 8-6A

Allen
McKinney
McKinney Boyd
Plano
Plano East
Plano West
Wylie

Comment: Allen, McKinney Boyd and the Plano schools get the benefit of the doubt, moved into a seven-team district after being in a nine-team behemoth in the last alignment. It does not, however, bode well for new 6A teams Wylie and McKinney.

Class 9-6A

Garland
Garland Lakeview Centennial
Garland Naaman Forest
North Garland
Rowlett
Sachse
South Garland

Comment: There are a few teams that could bunch in with Garland ISD's seven high schools, notably Wylie and Jesuit.

Class 10-6A

Longview
Mesquite
Mesquite Horn
North Mesquite
Rockwall
Rockwall-Heath
Tyler John Tyler
Tyler Lee

Comment: Of all the districts I've drawn up, this seems the most likely. Rockwall ISD athletic director Russ Reeves said on Tuesday that he expects to be in a district with East Texas' three 6As.

Wixon: In a game of inches, measurables make recruiting difficult for some high school stat stuffers

$
0
0

Editor's note: See SportsDayHS' full signing day schedule at the conclusion of this article.

Over the past two seasons, Will Reed passed for more than 5,000 yards, along with 61 touchdowns, while playing at the highest level of Texas high school football. But although Reed's numbers helped Rockwall light up the scoreboard, his number of note right now is zero.

Zero Division I scholarship offers. Nothing in Division II, either, for a three-year starter who was an all-district selection as a junior and senior.

Reed knows the reason, or at least part of it. At 6-1, he's considered too small for a pro-style quarterback.

"I don't see the difference in two inches," he said, "but college coaches know what they want."

Reed said what a lot of former high school football players are thinking this week, as the Feb. 3 national signing day approaches. Why does an inch or two of height make such a big difference? How can a couple tenths of a second in the 40-yard dash determine whether a recruit is elite or waiting by the phone?

Well, more than a million kids played high school football last year. Recruiters at the power programs can be choosy, and the result is the same thing each year:

Players who put up big numbers on the field can get stuffed in the recruiting game.

Denton's Xavier Scott, Frisco Idrees Ali and Terrell's Dawonya Tucker were offensive centerpieces last season, each rushing for more than 2,000 yards. But Tucker is 5-7, Ali is 5-9 and Scott is 5-10, and without head-turning speed, attracting scholarships has become a headache.

"I was thinking they were going to come in real hard after the year I had," Tucker said. "But it didn't happen."

It didn't happen for Arlington linebacker Matthew Anunda, either. The senior had 169 tackles and was named the Class 6A Defensive Player of the Year. But he's 5-9, and although solidly built at 195 pounds, he doesn't fit the "measurables."

There are seven linebackers among SportsDay's top 100 area recruits, and each is at least 6-foot tall. All but one is at least 6-2.

"They can measure your height, but they can't measure your heart," Anunda said. "I think I can do what those four- and five-star guys can do."

Anunda, whose only current scholarship offer is to Division II Southeastern Oklahoma State, might be right. But the big schools won't risk a scholarship.

Recruiters know what they're looking for, and they've usually found it by the time a player finishes his junior season. That's another reason why some players, despite senior seasons that gushed with success, are still waiting for scholarships to trickle in.

Coppell receiver Josh Fink, who had 81 receptions and 13 touchdowns in just 11 games last season, is one of those guys. An injury sidelined him for half of his junior season, when other receivers were gathering offers.

"I've talked with multiple schools from 'power five' conferences," said Fink, who has offers from Division I FBS schools Eastern Michigan and Louisiana-Monroe. "The bigger schools have offers out there with guys and they're waiting on them. Those guys kind of pushed back my recruiting."

The recruiting for Bishop Dunne quarterback Caleb Evans was pushed back by an exceptional teammate. As a junior, Evans was backup to senior Micah Simon, who led Bishop Dunne to a TAPPS state title and then signed with BYU.

Size isn't a problem for Evans, a dual-threat quarterback who is 6-3 and 190 pounds. And he had a tremendous senior year, passing for more than 3,200 yards, rushing for more than 1,200 and accounting for 64 touchdowns. But by the time he was a starter, most BCS programs had made their offers to quarterbacks.

Evans considered attending a junior college, proving himself, and then transferring to a four-year school. That's what his older brother, Jerod Evans, did after he was lightly recruited as a quarterback at Mansfield. Jerod played two seasons at Trinity Valley College, blossomed into a coveted recruit, and last month signed with Virginia Tech.

Caleb is now committed to Stephen F. Austin. It's not a BCS school, but Evans felt comfortable there, and playing for a smaller program won't alter his larger dream.

His dream is the one held by many high school seniors, regardless of their place on recruiting boards.

"My goal is to go to the NFL," Evans said. "Nowadays, you can pretty much go anywhere and still make it to the NFL."

Waiting for the call

More to come

Mesquite Horn head coach Mike Overton sets out pens for recruits before a national signing day ceremony at Mesquite Horn High School on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2015, in Mesquite. (Smiley N. Pool/The Dallas Morning News)

Let SportsDay be your guide leading up to next Wednesday's national signing day.

Today: A look at some of the area's top unrecruited and underrecruited players. Could colleges swoop in late?

Thursday: Has SMU coach Chad Morris learned from the mistakes of June Jones and made the D-FW area a recruiting priority?

Friday: The rise of one-time also-rans in recruiting makes the path back to the top more difficult for traditional powers like Texas.

Saturday: Texas A&M brought in a number of high-profile athletes in recent classes. But the Aggies quickly learned that not all five-star players pan out.

Sunday: Meet some of the area's top uncommitted recruits. Plus, a look at the Big 12's recent recruiting struggles, updated ranking lists and results from our local recruiting survey.

Monday: While many athletes will be signing scholarships on Wednesday, a number of area players will take a different route: attempting to be a walk-on.

Tuesday: A number of seniors this fall are already enrolled at colleges to get a leg up heading into their freshman seasons. None had as unique of a senior year as LSU's Dee Anderson.

Wednesday: College coaches do what they can to learn about prospects during the recruiting process, but surprises can still pop up even after athletes sign on the dotted line.

How Davene Carter, a high-flying Duncanville product, became Viper for the Harlem Globetrotters

Davene Carter grew up a basketball fan, a Mavericks fan, a Dirk Nowitzki fan.

"In that championship run, Dirk was unstoppable," Carter said, "and he's so humble with it. He's not about the money. He's about the team and about winning. Beautiful traits."

The Mavericks won the NBA title in Carter's senior year at Duncanville High School. He was a fan from afar, never having enough money to spend on a ticket to see Nowitzki and the Mavericks at American Airlines Center. But watching the sport, this team and that player helped shape his own career path.

"My dream was to be a professional athlete -- to get paid to play basketball," Carter said.

Five years after that NBA title, Carter has fulfilled his dream and will visit the AAC for the first time in his life this weekend -- as a rookie member of the Harlem Globetrotters.

"This is a dream come true to be able to come back and play in front of all my family and friends," Carter said. "Everyone who supported me knew that I'd be something. It'll be a homecoming. I'm just ready to show off for the fans."

That's what the Globetrotters do -- show off for the fans. But they also play some basketball. High-quality basketball. The only basketball observers who were not impressed with Golden State's record 24-0 start to this NBA this season were the Globetrotters. They have a 3,693-game winning streak that dates to 2006.

The World All-Stars will provide the competition at AAC this weekend for the Globetrotters. The Washington Generals have long since been retired as the Globetrotters' favorite patsy.

"They are way better than the Generals ever were," Carter said. "They really come out and compete. They're good. But regardless how good you are, you're not going to beat us."

The road was long for Carter to reach this point in his life. There was little interest in his basketball skills coming out of Duncanville High School and even less interest coming out of Tarleton State.

"I was injury prone in high school," Carter said. "In my freshman year [at South Oak Cliff before transferring], I dislocated my knee and chipped my patella and missed the whole year. I dislocated my knee again as a sophomore, then I broke my wrist my junior year. My senior year was my only full season."

Carter received only one scholarship offer -- from Tarleton State. He was a bit player as a freshman, contributed off the bench as a sophomore and then became a starter as a junior and senior. Tarleton reached the NCAA Division II Final Four in his senior season, with Carter finishing second on the Texans in rebounding and sixth in scoring.

The NBA didn't come calling. But what his basketball skills couldn't generate his track skills could.

Carter competed in the NCAA track and field championships as a high jumper and that spring in his legs earned him an invite to the 2015 NCAA slam dunk competition during the Final Four weekend. Competing against players from the big schools -- the Arizona States, Purdues and Wichita States -- Carter finished third. That got the attention of a team that loves to dunk, the Globetrotters.

"I played great in the [NCAA Division II] Final Four, but the slam dunk contest was on ESPN," Carter said. "It was viewed by millions. I got a lot of recognition from that. A week after the slam dunk contest, I got a tryout with the Globetrotters."

Now Carter is one of 31 players on the Globetrotters and all have nicknames. Carter goes by Viper. The players are listed at one of four positions -- center, forward, guard and showman. Carter is listed as a forward. There are only four showmen. That's the feature performer, the Meadowlark Lemon and Marques Haynes of the franchise.

"I want to play for the Globetrotters as long as they let me," Carter said. "Hopefully one day I'll be a showman and have my name on everybody's jersey."

The Globetrotters need the expanded roster because they play a 340-game schedule from December through May. Last weekend, the Globetrotters played six games in six different cities in five states. So the Globetrotters divide the players up into three teams to accommodate the schedule. (The team's other local, Grand Prairie's Joyce "Sweet J" Ekworomadu, will play in New York this weekend.)

The three games at AAC this weekend will be the 38th, 39th and 40th of Carter's Globetrotter career. He brought obvious basketball skills to his pro career. But the Globetrotters added one key element to his court persona.

"You have to put a smile on your face," Carter said. "That was something they had to teach me in training camp. Coming straight out of college ... it's a completely different mind-set that you really have to change here.

"We're family-friendly. We entertain the fans. But we all have that competitive edge and compete with each other on the court. As long as you have the personality -- and I've got a lot of personality -- you can just be yourself. You can be the happy, goofy, outgoing person that you are, and be that same person the court.

"I'm a Globetrotter. I can entertain. But I can also give you buckets."

After 10 seasons at Irving MacArthur, Brian Basil tabbed as Flower Mound's next head coach

Flower Mound has found its new football coach.

Brian Basil, who  spent the last 10 seasons as head coach at Irving MacArthur, was approved by the Lewisville ISD board of trustees during a special meeting today.

"I am extremely excited about the opportunity to lead the Flower Mound football program," Basil said in a news release. "We have a vision in place to build a program that reflects the standards of excellence that define Flower Mound High School and Lewisville ISD. My goal is to assist all coaches and student-athletes in all of our athletic programs to reach a level of success on and off the field that contributes to their overall high school experience."

Basil was the head football at Crandall in 2005, and prior to that, he was the defensive coordinator at MacArthur from 2002 to 2005. He began his coaching career as an assistant at Colleyville Heritage.

Basil takes over for Dane Johnson, who resigned in November after four seasons.

Southlake Carroll DB Obi Eboh commits to Stanford after decommitting from Texas

Five days after announcing that he was decommitting from Texas, Southlake Carroll defensive back Obi Eboh announced on Twitter that he has committed to Stanford.

Eboh (6-2, 190) is ranked as the 35th-best cornerback in the nation in the Class of 2016 and as the 55th-best overall recruit in Texas by 247Sports. He took an official visit to Stanford on Jan. 14. He had said that Stanford and Ohio State were his two finalists.

But Cleveland.com reported that it didn't appear that Ohio State would have room for Eboh because the Buckeyes are still recruiting four-star athlete Jordan Fuller of Westwood (N.J.) Old Tappan, four-star cornerback Damar Hamlin of Pittsburgh (Pa.) Central Catholic and four-star cornerback Carlos Becker of Kissimmee (Fla.) Osceola. Cleveland.com said those three prospects are Ohio State's top-remaining defensive back targets in the 2016 class.

Realignment may create a Frisco ISD-only district and 2 Dallas ISD-only districts

Frisco Reedy won't have any seniors next season, but it will make its varsity football debut as a Class 5A school. That will give the Frisco ISD eight high schools in 5A, and they could end up in a district by themselves when the UIL announces its biennial realignment Monday.

"We definitely have let our wishes be known to those people, that if at all possible, we would love to try to be together," Frisco ISD athletic director David Kuykendall said. "They haven't given us any indication which way it will go."

The seven Frisco ISD schools currently in 5A share District 9-5A with Little Elm and the Colony, which are both less than 10 miles from Frisco. Those two aren't the only candidates to be the school that joins the Frisco schools if they're put in a nine-team district.

"I know there are going to be some individuals out there like Little Elm, The Colony, maybe Prosper, maybe McKinney North, that are going to have to find a place to call home," Kuykendall said.

The Dallas ISD could have two districts all to itself, both in 5A. Two DISD schools will be changing classifications, with Sunset dropping from 6A to 5A and Madison moving from 4A to 3A.

"That will leave us with 14 5A schools," DISD assistant athletic director Scott Jackson said. "We're thinking there will be two seven-team districts for Dallas."

Skyline and W.T. White will be the only DISD schools left in 6A. Who will they be paired with after spending two years in a district with Jesuit, Carrollton R.L. Turner and Irving ISD schools?

"We have no idea," Jackson said.

What are some powerhouse districts in sports other than football? Here are a few

$

One of the toughest new districts for any sport will be District 7-6A in girls basketball.

Duncanville is ranked No. 1 in the state in 6A, Cedar Hill is No. 9 and South Grand Prairie is No. 17. Also in that district will be District 9-6A leader Irving MacArthur and a DeSoto team that has won 18 games.

In boys basketball, District 9-6A will feature Coppell and state-ranked Skyline and Richardson, which are all leading their district. If the new 7-6A had been in place this season, it would have featured two McDonald's All-Americans in senior Marques Bolden of DeSoto and senior Andrew Jones of Irving MacArthur.

District 9-4A for boys basketball will include defending 4A state champion Bridgeport and 2012 state champion Argyle. After meeting in a 4A regional final last season, Madison and Triple A Academy both dropped down to 3A and were paired up in District 11-3A.

If District 5-6A stays the same for girls soccer as it is for football and basketball, it will be home to four of the top nine teams in the state. Trophy Club Byron Nelson is ranked No. 1 in the state by TopDrawerSoccer.com, Southlake Carroll is No. 5, Flower Mound Marcus is No. 6 and Flower Mound is No. 9.

District 5-6A will be powerful in baseball, too. It has 2014 state champion Flower Mound, as well as perennial powers Southlake Carroll and Flower Mound Marcus.

In softball, two teams that could make long playoff runs in 5A this season are Lovejoy and North Forney. Starting  next year, they will be together in 15-5A.

Breaking down the new D-FW 6A districts

Below are the area 6A districts with enrollment numbers and commentary:

REGION I

District 3-6A

Abilene, 2264.25

Haltom, 2664

Keller, 2797

Keller Central, 2581

Keller Fossil Ridge, 2385

Keller Timber Creek, 3076.5

Weatherford, 2326

Comment: As notable as Abilene coming east is the existence of only two West Texas/Panhandle districts. Such an arrangement means that two D/FW area districts (3-6A and 4-6A) will meet up in the first round, limiting travel.

District 4-6A

Arlington, 2812.5

Arlington Bowie, 3063.5

Arlington Lamar, 3001.5

Arlington Sam Houston, 3754.5

Arlington Martin, 3364

FW Young Men's Leadership Academy, 127.67

FW Young Women's Leadership Academy*, 144

FW Paschal, 2531

Mansfield, 2366

North Crowley:2464

Comment: UIL rules require Fort Worth magnets to be drawn in 6A district, but they are likely on the move. Will need unanimity from departing and arriving districts to make it happen, but current members have agreed to do so.

District 5-6A

Euless Trinity, 3378

Hurst L.D. Bell, 2951

Flower Mound, 3541

Flower Mound Marcus, 3317

Hebron, 3454

Trophy Club Byron Nelson, 2632

Lewisville, 4379

Southlake Carroll, 2691.5

Comment: Trinity and Carroll stay together for another turn, with Lewisville ISD schools joining them. Trinity is no longer an enrollment behemoth (fourth-largest school in this district), but it would need Carroll or Marcus to miss the playoffs to be a 6A Division II playoff team.

District 6-6A

Allen, 6380

Denton Guyer, 2475

McKinney, 2743

McKinney Boyd, 2846

Plano, 5479.5

Plano East, 5329.5

Plano West, 5648

Wylie, 2231

Comment: The state's four largest high schools will always make for a brutal district. Adding Denton Guyer, a budding powerhouse in a variety of sports and a logical addition to several other 6A districts, borders on cruel.

District 7-6A

Cedar Hill, 2351.5

DeSoto, 3036

Duncanville, 4258

Grand Prairie, 2589

Irving, 3100

Irving MacArthur, 3483

Irving Nimitz, 3221

South Grand Prairie, 3363

Comment: Typically paired with Dallas ISD and Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD schools, Irving ISD gets dealt a tough hand. DeSoto has a good chance to be a 6A Division II team, with an enrollment smaller than all but Cedar Hill and Grand Prairie.

District 9-6A

Coppell, 3645.5

Jesuit, 2214

Lake Highlands, 2650

Richardson, 2688

Richardson Berkner, 2492

Richardson Pearce, 2289.5

Skyline, 4733

W.T. White, 2295

Comment: Coppell shifts the balance of power in Region II in a variety of sports, especially boys and girls soccer and baseball. The district likely sets up for a tough battle in football among Richardson ISD teams for the fourth-place playoff spot.

District 10-6A

Garland, 2650

Garland Lakeview Centennial, 2318

Garland Naaman Forest, 2071

North Garland, 2681

Rowlett, 2711

Sachse, 2793

South Garland, 2251

Comment: Naaman Forest is the only 6A school in the entire state that asked to be moved up to its current classification. That sacrifice allows Garland ISD to have its own district.

District 11-6A

Longview, 2188.5

Mesquite, 2883

Mesquite Horn, 2321

North Mesquite, 2846

Rockwall, 2426

Rockwall-Heath, 2282

Tyler John Tyler, 2270

Tyler Lee, 2580

Comment: All but two of these teams made the playoffs in 2015 (Mesquite and Tyler Lee). The addition of traditional powers Longview and John Tyler to the 6A mix makes for one of the area's most difficult districts.
