Allen OL Greg Little kept calm during recruitment but life will get hectic once he gets to Ole Miss

ALLEN - A week ago, Greg Little strolled into the Allen Athletic Center about as mellow as can be. College recruiting can be a pressure cooker, with coaches pressing in on prospects until the very last moment. Little, though, showed none of that stress heading into Wednesday’s national signing day, despite being the most ballyhooed offensive line prospect out of the Dallas area in more than three decades.

A consensus Top 4 national prospect by the four major recruiting services, Little (6-6, 315) had already made his college choice - picking Ole Miss in mid-December via a much-publicized video on Bleacher Report - and was getting ready for his last official visit, to Oxford, Mississippi. The calls, texts, visits had pretty much dried up; only two other schools, Alabama and LSU, still bothered to stay in touch.

“Your recruiting process is what you make of it,” Little said. “If you let it get hectic, it can be. But mine was pretty easy, simple; I kept it under control on who I wanted to talk to, contact. All the coaches were respectful of my time. It wasn’t too crazy.”

His life will be crazy soon enough. Ole Miss junior Laremy Tunsil declared for the NFL Draft in early January, creating a hole at left tackle. Little will head to Oxford - along with Allen defensive back Jaylon Jones - as a part of one of the nation’s best recruiting classes, immediately competing for a starting role.

“I just felt like Coach [Hugh] Freeze has that program going in the right direction,” Little said. “We’ll be a top national-championship contender in the next couple of years. I want to be a part of that.”

When Fox Sports writer Bruce Feldman surveyed 36 college coaches last month, asking which incoming freshman could have a big impact in college football next season, Little was one of three players to receive more than two votes.

“He’s everything you’re looking for,” a Texas-based coach told Feldman.

The reason isn’t just his size or strength, according to former Allen offensive coordinator and current San Antonio Brandeis head coach Jeff Fleener. It’s Little’s ankles.

“He’s got this big frame, big legs and little ankles,” Fleener said. “His feet are off-the-charts good. I think that’s the most impressive thing about him, especially when you saw him at those combines and camps, with pads and without pads. Those things favor defensive guys, but he was able to stand out because he has so much athletic ability to move and run.”

Fleener said Little’s athleticism was similar to former Allen star Cedric Ogbuehi, a first-round draft pick by Cincinnati in the 2015 NFL Draft.

“That high ceiling is there,” Fleener said. “I think that Greg still has more room to develop and grow.”

Since SportsDay started ranking the area’s top prospects in 2002, Little is the fifth offensive lineman to be the area’s top-rated player, joining Lake Highlands’ Kent Perkins (2013), South Grand Prarie’s Tray Allen (2007), Euless Trinity’s Ofa Mohetau (2003) and Plano East’s Justin Blalock (2002).

But unlike Allen, Mohetau and Blalock, Little projects as a left tackle in college, the most coveted line position. The hype surrounding Little is similar to that of Highland Park’s David Richards, who signed with SMU in 1984 after being named national player of the year by Parade Magazine.

Not bad for a kid that came into high school as a tight end.

Little’s mother, Terry Lacy-Little, recalled a conversation she had with Allen offensive line and strength coach Mike Carter, before he moved up to varsity as a sophomore.

“Coach Carter said, ‘Give me one year with your son, and I promise that every college in the U.S. will want him,’” Lacy-Little said. “I thought, OK, but didn’t really think it would ever come to fruition. But he was absolutely right. It’s been a whirlwind.”

While Little’s world is about to drastically change, for now he’s still in the protective bubble of Allen, with his mother’s office just down the road, across from Allen’s Lowery Freshman Center.

It’s a program that Little helped catapult over his three-year varsity career; Allen’s semifinal loss to Austin Westlake in this year’s playoffs was Little’s only high school defeat, going 46-1 as a varsity starter.

“It’s been amazing,” Little said of his high school experience. “A great group of guys, working hard, winning games.

“I’m definitely sad to leave. But I’ve got a lot of things ahead of me.”

Greg Little

Allen, offensive tackle

Age: 18

Ht./Wt.: 6-6, 310

About Little: A two-time selection by USA Today for its All-USA team... Little’s father, Derrick, was a linebacker at South Carolina and a seventh-round pick by Tampa Bay in the 1989 NFL Draft... Originally pledge to Texas A&M between his sophomore and junior years, but reopened his recruiting last summer.

Future major: Business or Finance

Best player he played against in high school: Coppell defensive tackle Solomon Thomas. “He wasn’t the fastest guy, but he was just so strong.”

On former Allen QB and current Oklahoma transfer Kyler Murray: “He made our job as offensive linemen a lot easier, being able to run around.”

Better late than never: Euless Trinity DT Chris Daniels misses start of ceremony, but comes through for Texas

$

Given recent history at Euless Trinity, when four-star defensive tackle Chris Daniels was 10 minutes late to the start of the school's signing day ceremony, many in attendance -- myself included -- started to wonder if something was up.

Daniels -- No. 12 on SportsDay's Area Top 100 rankings -- had announced a final four after backing away from a previous Oklahoma commitment; Texas, Texas A&M, Tennessee and Arkansas were all in the mix. And while a placard placed on the table prior to the ceremony read 'Chris Daniels, Texas Longhorns,' his decision could have changed. Crazier things had happened on signing day at Trinity.

In 2011, Trinity's star tight end Nila Kasitati (or Kneubuhl, as he was going by then) was the last signee for Oklahoma's signing day class, picking the Sooners over Baylor in a last-minute decision. That choice was further complicated by his mother, who initially refused to sign the National Letter of Intent, wanting him to stay a little closer to home by going to Waco.

Maybe something similar was in the works, I thought.

In the end, though, it was just tardiness.

"He's just running late, as usual," Trinity recruiting coordinator John Thompson grumbled.

When Daniels finally made an appearance in Trinity's gym, there was little question of his intentions. Dressed in a burnt orange shirt, with a Longhorn cap already on his head, he quickly announced his plans to sign with the Longhorns and flashed a Hook 'Em Horns signal.

It was a great start to what has become a landslide day for Charlie Strong and company.

When asked if Strong was the reason for his decision -- after all, Daniels' twitter feed had a picture of him dabbing with the Longhorns' head coach less than a week ago in his Euless home -- Daniels didn't equivocate.

"All I've got to say is that if you don't want to go to Texas, don't let him get on your couch and talk to you, because that man is very persuasive," Daniels said. "He's like an uncle to me - Uncle Charlie, for real. The whole staff - honestly, I can say it's like another family."

Since Daniels' signing, a raft of other highly-rated players have signed with Texas, including Nacogdoches safety Brandon Jones and Aldine Davis linebacker Jeffrey McCulloch.

"You guys are going to see, you guys are going to see; making history today," Daniels said.

Ole Miss coach's words help sway Duncanville recruit to Texas

Ole Miss coach's advice benefits 'Horns

DUNCANVILLE -- Oddly enough, it was the words of Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze that convinced Duncanville's Marcel Southall to become a Texas Longhorn.

On a recruiting visit to Ole Miss last weekend, the 6-3, 270-pound defensive tackle listened while Freeze tried to convince Mississippi high school players to bypass out-of-state offers.

"He said why go out of state when you can stay home and make history,'' said Southall, who also visited Oklahoma and Miami (Fla.) "I thought to myself that made sense.''

Southall made his decision on Sunday and let the Texas coaches know, but kept it a secret until donning a Longhorn cap at Duncanville's signing day celebration.

Martin career rusher chooses UNT

ARLINGTON -- The chance to be a part of a program turnaround and to again be a teammate with his best friend swung Arlington Martin running back Nic Smith to the University of North Texas.

"It is an up-and-coming program,'' said Smith, a member of SportDay's top 100 area recruits. "They are looking to turn things around and I want to be a part of it.''

He will be joined in Denton by Martin wide receiver Tyler Wilson.

Smith, a four-year varsity player, holds the Martin career rushing record despite missing four games in his senior season with a knee injury.

Texas a quick sell for Arlington Bowie OL Imade

ARLINGTON -- Recruiting was a snap for Arlington Bowie offensive lineman Tope Imade.

One day after receiving an offer last April, the 6-6, 325-pound tackle committed to Texas. On Wednesday, he made it official.

"For me, the head coach [Charlie Strong] was one of the main reasons,'' Imade related. "I could see his goals. Academics are No. 1 with him.''

Imade, in the top 30 percent of his class, plans to study industrial engineering with the hope of one day becoming a CEO.

Playoff run leads to 8 Arlington Lamar signings

ARLINGTON -- A Region I semifinal run in the fall led to eight football signings for Arlington Lamar. Wide receiver Kofi Boateng, an Arkansas signee, said he hopes his senior class created a path for younger players to follow.

Three Lamar scholarship winners, quarterback Shane Buechele (Texas), cornerback Madre Harper (Oklahoma State) and offensive lineman Chris Owens (Alabama) have already begun college classes and did not attend Wednesday's Arlington ISD ceremony.

"Shane is one of my best friends and we would have loved to remain teammates, but it just didn't work out,'' Boateng said. "Hopefully, this will turn out to be best for both of us.''

--Randy Jennings

Recruiting connections follow Samples to Duncanville

DUNCANVILLE -- Large recruiting classes were a staple for Skyline under Reginald Samples. The head coach ranks in the top 10 nationally in the number of scholarship winners since 2000.

In his first year at Duncanville, not much has changed. Nine Panthers signed in a ceremony at the school auditorium.

"I never try to influence a kid on where he should go,'' Samples said. "I'm there for advice if they want it, but I don't ever want to hear an unhappy player say he went to a school because I influenced him.''

Need proof that playing in DFW helps recruiting? Look at Trinity's signing day

$

In most other states, Tyler Natee could have been lost in the shuffle.

He wasn't a prototypical quarterback, even of the dual-threat variety, but moved into the quarterback spot for Euless Trinity out of necessity. Natee became a 5-10, 225-pound battering ram who was called on to make a few passes a game, playing out of position for the past two seasons - and sharing carries with fellow senior Ja'Ron Wilson - to help Trinity succeed.

On Wednesday, his sacrifice for Trinity and belief in the institution of Texas high school football paid off; Natee signed with Indiana on national signing day.

"I was a little worried, but I trusted in the process that my head coach, Coach [Chris] Jensen, had for me," Natee said. "I was worried that by playing quarterback, I wasn't going to get looks. But I did and it got me here."

There's no argument that the Dallas/Fort Worth-area is one of the national hotbeds for football recruiting. Perusing a list of D/FW signees will well over 100 FBS-bound players, headed to all 10 FBS conferences.

In some parts of the country, a good high school player might struggle to have his name known to college recruiters. But in Dallas, if a player shines - especially at one of the area's marquee programs - he will be noticed quickly.

"Because Texas is one of the powerhouses in the country for football - Texas, California, Florida and Georgia - we have more opportunities to play against better competition and get that chance to get better looks," Natee said.

Trinity defensive tackle Chris Daniels hopped around a bit at the start of his high school career. He played as a freshman at San Antonio Roosevelt, then transferred after the season to spend the spring of his freshman year at Mona Shores High School in Muskegon, Mich. When he transferred to Trinity before the start of his sophomore season, his visibility predictably skyrocketed.

Daniels chose Texas on Wednesday, picking the Longhorns over his other finalists: Arkansas, Tennessee and Texas A&M.

When asked if he would have had the same offer sheet if he stayed in Western Michigan, Daniels laughed.

"There's nothing like Texas high school football," Daniels said. "We prove it on the field, and prove it in the stats. I don't think I would have, but God has a plan. As you can see, his plan for me was to go to Texas."

Wilson, Trinity's running back who signed with Oklahoma State, said that his time slugging it out against some of the state's best programs would translate into future success.

"Since Texas football is the best football, nobody - like that team we played from California, [Concord] De La Salle - has anything like it," Wilson said. "Since Texas has the best competition, I think I'm going to do well heading into college. I think I can take my skills, and Oklahoma State can make me look good."

Which area team had the most football players sign this year?

The question posed in the headline has a bit of a loaded answer. Schools send us the list of football players who signed on Wednesday and that's what these number totals are based off of. But I think there's something to be said for sending a smaller group of recruits to Division-I FBS programs.

So below we have the total number and then in parenthesis will be the number of signees to FBS programs. I also added where the majority of recruits from a certain school are going:

Skyline, 22 (5 going to FBS programs)

*5 to Texas College, 3 to Texas Tech, 2 to TCU

Lancaster, 18 (2)

*4 to Texas College, 3 to Cisco JC

DeSoto, 16 (6)

*2 to Oklahoma State, 2 to Texas State

Cedar Hill, 16 (5)

*4 to SE Oklahoma State, 2 to Missouri Valley College

SOC 13 (2)

*4 to Langston

Allen, 13 (7)

*2 to Ole Miss

Garland 12 (1)

*3 to Bacone College

Carter 10 (0)

*8 to Texas College

Mansfield Lake Ridge 9 (3)

*3 to Southern Nazarene

Coppell 9 (4)

*2 to Abilene Christian

Euless Trinity 9 (3)

*2 to West Texas A&M

Arlington Sam Houston 9 (2)

*2 to Tyler JC, 2 to SE Oklahoma State

Mesquite Horn 9 (2)

West Mesquite 9 (1)

*3 to Missouri Valley College

Irving MacArthur 8 (0)

*3 to Langston, 2 to Texas A&M Commerce

Sachse 8 (3)

*2 to Baylor

Madison 7 (0)

*6 to Texas College

McKinney North 7 (1)

*3 to Midwestern State

Mesquite Poteet (2)

*2 to Hardin-Simmons

Flower Mound Marcus 6 (4)

Arlington Martin 6 (5)

*2 to North Texas

Southlake Carroll 6 (3)

---

I wanted to cut it off here so as to avoid listing every single school, but wanted to recognize a couple schools that cleaned up with FBS recruits:

All four of Arlington Lamar's signees went to big Division I programs: Texas, Alabama, Arkansas, Oklahoma State

All four of Bishop Dunne's  signees did the same: Cal, Louisiana-Monroe, Kansas State, Air Force

Cedar Hill, ranked No. 2 in the area 6A rankings, hung with Duncanville for three quarters on Tuesday, but then the Pantherettes pulled away for their 31st straight victory. Zarielle Green had 18 points and Ciera Johnson had 16 for Duncanville in a 59-49 win that was one of the toughest of the season.

And now the team that is No. 1 in the area rankings and state rankings is inching toward the No. 1 spot in a national ranking.

Duncanville (31-0) is up to No. 2 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 rankings. The Pantherettes were No. 4 a few weeks ago, then climbed to No. 3 and are now behind only St. Mary's of Stockton, Calif.

The other Texas teams in the rankings are Galena Park North Shore (29-1) and Mansfield Timberview (28-0).

Here are the complete national rankings.

Area football stars who made last-minute college decisions talk about why they picked Alabama, UCLA and Texas

Here's a recap from Staff Writers Matt Wixon and Michael Florek and special contributors Tom Washburn and Randy Jennings on top area football recruits who announced their college decision on national signing day, with a look at why they picked the college they did:

When Sachse cornerback Jared Mayden was a freshman, he told his friends that Baylor was his dream school. With teammates Devin and Donovan Duvernay signing with Baylor, Mayden could've been pulled to green and gold, too.

But when Mayden put on a hat to reveal his choice Wednesday, it was the red of Alabama, which won the national championship last month.

"It was just my relationship with Coach Pruitt," Mayden said of Jeremy Pruitt, the Alabama defensive coordinator, "and really the whole coaching staff."

Mayden, rated No. 24 in the state in 247Sports Composite recruiting rankings, had been committed to Oregon before reopening his recruitment last month. His other finalist was Oklahoma. A Rice hat was also on the table in front of him, but that was forced into the picture by Jared's older brother, James Mayden, a receiver at Rice.

Younger brother Jalen Mayden, a sophomore dual-threat quarterback for Sachse, is expected to be one of the state's top recruits in the Class of 2018.

Signing with UCLA ends long journey for Plano star: Two weeks ago, Plano running back Brandon Stephens decommitted from Stanford, setting off a frenzy of 6 a.m. phone calls and campus visits.

On Wednesday, the 247Sports composite three-star recruit stood at a podium in Plano's gym and announced that he'd be attending UCLA as he donned the school's hat and his mom revealed a Photoshop image of a UCLA player with "Stephens" on the back of his jersey.

"I'm glad it's over," Stephens said. "It was a lot. Now that it's over and everything, I can finally just enjoy senior year and look forward to going to Los Angeles."

Stephens' recruiting ramped up at the beginning of last year. He named a top six in July. In September, he committed to Stanford. In late January, he reconsidered.

"We committed pretty early in the game, only to find out later that we truly had done it a little too early and there were other schools that were truly interested," Brandon's mom, Charlotte, said. "He said, 'I really should reconsider this.' We gave it a lot of thought and talked about it and so by all means, we opened up his recruitment, and it flooded the gates. I can't tell you how many people called within 12 hours. The phone was ringing at 6 a.m. You can't prepare anyone for that."

In the two weeks since opening his recruiting, Stephens said it came down to Alabama, Texas A&M and UCLA. He visited Alabama twice in the last six weeks, and took an official visit to UCLA last week.

In total, Charlotte estimates that they visited approximately 15 schools from all over the country. The last visit mattered most.

"I went on visit to UCLA this past weekend," Stephens said. "It just seemed right. I clicked with the players, the coaches. I could just see myself there, most importantly. That's why I changed to UCLA.

"I'm pretty sure that in the next two years UCLA is going to be a big school that people are going to look at. With Josh Rosen coming back for his sophomore year, we have a big opportunity to make the playoffs. If not, maybe the Rose Bowl."

Michael Florek

Plano East receiver focused on more than football: Audie Omotosho's decision was not officially revealed until Plano East's ceremony, when the wide receiver announced he was going to UCLA. The suspense was lessened by the fact that his place card at the table was emblazoned with UCLA.

"A lot of things factor into it," Omotosho said when asked what led him to pick UCLA. "Your academic side of things, and that's my priority, and that's the priority that's been set as the standard by my family, as well. That's first and foremost."

Omotosho talked with former Plano West star running back Soso Jamabo, who signed with UCLA last year and played as a freshman last season.

"He kept it objective and just let me know the type of opportunity there is," Omotosho said.

Tom Washburn

Ole Miss coach helps Duncanville star pick UT: Oddly enough, it was the words of Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze that convinced Duncanville's Marcel Southall to become a Texas Longhorn.

On a recruiting visit to Ole Miss last weekend, the 6-3, 270-pound defensive tackle listened while Freeze tried to convince Mississippi high school players to bypass out-of-state offers.

"He said why go out of state when you can stay home and make history," said Southall, who also visited Oklahoma and Miami (Fla.). "I thought to myself, 'That made sense.' "

Southall made his decision Sunday and let the Texas coaches know, but kept it a secret until donning a Longhorns cap at Duncanville's signing day celebration.

Missouri drops South Oak Cliff football player from recruiting class after he is arrested on multiple assault charges

$

By Tod Palmer, Kansas City Star

Dallas high school linebacker Marvin Terry didn't sign with the Missouri football team as expected Wednesday on National Signing Day and it appears he never will.

Terry, 18 of South Oak Cliff High, was arrested Jan. 25 on multiple assault charges and warrants. He remains in Dallas County Jail on $34,500 bond.

By NCAA rule, Missouri coach Barry Odom and his staff aren't allowed to comment on specific players until they have signed a national letter of intent, but a source confirmed that the Tigers no longer were pursuing Terry and have no intention of signing him.

Court records paint the picture of a turbulent relationship between Terry and the mother of his child.

The first incident for which Terry is currently jailed occurred July 9, when he is alleged to have pushed his girlfriend, who was eight months pregnant at the time, to the ground during a verbal altercation, according to Dallas County arrest warrant. The victim called 911 after feeling abdominal pain and was treated by Dallas Fire Rescue.

Dallas County prosecutors issued an arrest warrant July 31 after detectives spoke with the girlfriend. Terry was arraigned Aug. 18 on one count of "assault causes bodily injury family violence." Bond in that case originally was set at $1,500, but it was increased to $3,000 on Jan. 26. He was offered a plea deal, but the case was still working its way through the courts after a series of continuances.

Terry's girlfriend subsequently gave birth to their child.

Police arrested Terry again after another alleged assault Jan. 5 at a different residence. According to that arrest warrant, Terry pushed the mother of his child, identified by police as the same woman from the previous assault. The victim said Terry "hit her numerous times with his fists and kicked her on the ribs, causing her to feel pain and bruising."

"The suspect threatened that would kill her and give her a reason to call police, causing her to fear for her life," according to the affidavit.

Dallas County prosecutors issued an arrest warrant Jan. 14 in that case. He was arrested Jan. 25 on another count of "assault cause bodily injury family violence" with bond set at $1,500.

Prosecutors added two more charges Jan. 25 during his arraignment, one count of assaulting a family/house member twice within 12 months and another count of assaulting a family/house member by impeding breath or circulation. Both included a $15,000 bond.

Under terms of his bond order, Terry was ordered not to have contact with the alleged victim or her family. He also was placed on drug and alcohol screening and isn't allowed to possess "a deadly weapon."

He remained in custody for insufficient bond, according to court records.

Terry -- a 6-foot-2, 230-pound defensive end, who projects as a college linebacker -- was an ESPN four-star prospect. Rivals, 247 Sports and Scout all listed him as a three-star recruit.

He chose Missouri ahead of Arkansas, California, Colorado, Louisville, Miami (Fla.), Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas Tech, UCLA, Wisconsin and others.

ESPN listed Terry as the No. 22 outside linebacker in the 2016 recruiting class and the No. 65 player in talent-rich Texas, while Scout listed him as the No. 24 outside linebacker.

He was Rivals' No. 24 weak-side defensive end and the No. 57 player in Texas and was 247 Sports' No. 31 weak-side defensive end, the No. 76 player in Texas and No. 497 overall.
